ScanGauge II AFR possible on 96'-99' w/mod?

Hey guys,

Have been lurking for quite some time now and have owned multiple yota's! I have a 97' 3.4 5spd. Just picked up a scangauge ii for $80 :) Going to be doing a rear mount turbo very soon! I almost have all my parts...

I have been researching and it seems that any runner made before 00' does not have the stock wideband O2 sensors reporting AFR to the ECU, so:

1. Do the 96'-99' runners have the capability to read AFR through the stock ECU, BUT do not have the correct "wideband" O2 sensors reporting??? So, I simply need to aquire a stock wideband O2 sensor from a 00'-02' to properly send the signal to the computer

OR

2. The 96'-99' ECU's simply cannot read AFR's at all???

Thanks for any and all help everyone!

AFR/02 woes

Hey there. I can assure you that if your vehicle has 02's, it only reads 02's. The 2 types of sensors operate completely differently. An 02 fluctuates from 0-1 Volt and tells the ECU roughly what the exhaust is doing while a wideband 02 pumps out an amperage, thru a 3.3 volt reference. It's a lot to take in, but just trust me on this. ASE Master tech and lover of yotas. You can tell which your vehicle has by looking at the emissions sticker under the hood. Either it says "02s (2)" or "AFR, 02s".

Thanks so much for the reply! I wasnt aware of the voltage difference between the "standard O2" and "AFR O2". I know my runner currently has the standard 0-1V sensor... Therfore my ECU wont read AFR through the scangauge because either: 1- My ECU is unable to process AFR's or 2- It does not have the correct O2 to provide the info. So, I am curious IF I plugged in a AFR O2 to my 4runner... Could my ECU read and supply me a AFR through the scangauge?

Sorry, but nope. The older ECU's can't handle an AFR 02 no matter what. It just a different system. They don't even produce a PID (parameter Identification) for AFR when I look at their data display. I have never seen them do that at least. I use Snap-On scanners, and use vehicle specific software, and mine won't display AFR. Simply put, the older 02 sensors are just too vague (for lack of a better term). Hence why AFR 02's are literally wideband, and much more accurate. For us with the more primitive electronics, we'd have to install a stand alone AFR gauge like a Uego or something. Me personally, I'm gonna try out the 30-4900 I think it is. It's a combo boost/AFR in one gauge, also has ability to shut down engine at specific failsafe criteria etc etc etc.
but ya, plugging in an AFR 02 where a standard 02 lives won't give you the result you're after. You could potentially install a newer model ECU, do the wiring research and then run the newer AFR 02's, buuuut a good AFR is like $160, the one I want is $300....the ECU/harness/AFR swap would be a pretty penny....stand alone is likely where you'll be heading.
Good luck, and keep us posted. Overcoming obstacles is half the fun.

THANK YOU!!! That is exactly the answer I needed (although not what I wanted to hear LOL) I will try to pick up a UEGO or Prosport Wideband. Again, I really appreciate it!

Most people that install widebands have a bung welded in to the exhaust and install the wideband O2 there. Simple and cheap and easy.

Then again he still has issues logging the AFR. For a good tuning setup logging of AFR is essential since its very hard to watch the rpms, boost, afr while your driving and going WOT. Much easier to sit down on the laptop, go through the log and fine tune the afr where you want.

IMO if planning on turbo, i would run a full EMS like a megasquirt or AEM ems so you can fully tune out the motor. Running piggy back and watching wbo2 is a guessing game. But can work, I mean i have tuned this way many times. Just prefer logging of the sensor or watching it.

Agreed. I was just looking at ease of installation of the wideband O2 itself. I'd imagine there's a gauge on the market that has a recall function on it. I'm just starting to look in to this myself for my own turbo build. Gas motors are so much more complicated than diesel.

N/A gas ECU's suck ass for boost.

Cars with turbos stock have a lot built in to support the turbo so its a lot easier to upgrade and mod.

On the dsm for $600 you have full EMS with full control of timing, fuel, injectors compensation, and full logging with ability to add external sensors for logging. I could directly rewrite the stock ECU and flash to the eprom anything I wanted.

These ecu's dont have much options.
