hey 3rd gen fam,

OK so I recently have been up and running with SG II.

I read the manual and feel like I calibrated it correctly and every fillup, I put the gallons and price in there, etc.

I took an 8-mile drive round trip, and ended up at 11.3MPG total. I've seen it as low as 8 to 9 MPG if driving like 4 miles one way.

Is that accurate? I'm guessing short trips within the city are horrible for MPG? I was unaware that short city trips give me the MPG of a Lamborghini.

I think this is about right lol, similar for my truck. City driving is AWFUL in these trucks. Stopping and starting seems to just DRINK the gas. It's very strange but I get similar numbers as this. But you go on the highway for 200 miles? 22mpg
 
For a vehicle that was suppose to get 16 city/19 hwy from the beginning, you're not TOO far off. However, if you 4Runner is bone stock then I'd imagine you should be getting closer to the 14 mark.

yes, i'm bone stock minus a hitch receiver in the back.

20 years takes a toll I'm sure. My 97 model year was manufactured in June 96.

All the maintenance checklist that we advise newbs with around T4R is up to date.

Here's the thing though [MENTION=58830]JWaldz[/MENTION]; whether I drive city or highway, I can generally get 200 miles out of a tank before the E light according to the meter on the dash.

The pump consistently stops around 14.3 gallons or so to go from E light to Full.

The math on 200/14.3 means I'm getting ~14MPG or so by the end of the tank, regardless of what SGII says.

I still might try a tank of 87 instead of 85 that I normally use and see what happens. I subscribe to the school of thought that 85 in Denver is the same as 87 at sea-level.

I regularly can swing 250-265 miles per tank mainly city travel. I've seen 300 miles doing all highway road trips. I changed out the air filter, the fuel filter, made sure the tire pressure was on point, and very little change in mpg improvement.

I tend to bite my tongue when I see newer vehicles (non-4Runner) getting upwards of 600 miles per tank.

For the record, I also have been cycling the right info when filling up and whatnot on my SGII, and it stays pretty accurate.
 
4 miles in the winter = horrible mileage. Even worse if there is water and/or snow on the roads. It is mostly the cold engine requiring more fuel during warm-up.

Just make sure the estimates of gallons used are pretty close and it will be accurate.

I'll get 16-18 if it is mostly my commute (6 miles, SoCal) and 20-23 on the highway on longer trips (30+ miles at a time).

normal for a city 8 miles round trip. I can get worse during cold winter days. Try a 50 miles highway trip and you'll get far better mileage.

You say 20-23 mpg freeway.. is this the 4 cylinder or v6? Picked up a 3.4L and mileage sucks in town. Only one trip on the free at and I got 20. Wondering how I can increase city driving.
