ScanGuage II to determine HP

Hey Guys,

So I just got off the phone with Scanguage and they say that their scanguage2: Amazon.com: ScanGauge II Ultra Compact 3-in-1 Automotive Computer with Customizable Real-Time Fuel Economy Digital Gauges: Automotive will display HP. They said you may have to dyno the car to match it but that it would work. This will also troubleshoot codes and do several other things for me, but I am most interested in it telling me what my HP is.

Does anyone have experience with this product and if so how did it do? :snacker:

Yes and No. Some people don't understand that there are several HP ratings and that the one that has the most relevance is "True Horespower at the Wheel".. this is the HP that is actually delivered for use at the wheels. You can honestly only get this on a dyno machine that is able to test the power coming from the spinning wheels.

That said, these computers will get ya close. These computers will be off as they are a formula equation that won't take into account how much is lost from the actual engine to the wheels through the tranny, shaft and diff.

Anyway. Yea. It will get ya close enough to be of use.

Edit: I heard somewhere that in general (just spitballing here..) you loose around 20ish% on auto's through the transmission and 10ish% on Manual transmissions on HP that makes it to the wheels.
Obviously the technological prowess of the tranny matters as I think the newer CVT auto's do a MUCH better job than a traditional auto in getting engine HP to the wheel.

Thanks for the reply, that sounds pretty close to what I was hoping, I figure if I buy this and dyno my car I can also use the scanguage at that time to correct the calculation that the scanguage gives me so if mods are done it will be close, without having to do a dyno each time a mod is made.

theres a code to punch in and its gona give u the horsepower display, i dont know how accurate it is, but it does display it.

i don't have a scangauge, but i doubt it'd be accurate enough to judge the efficacy of minor mods (intake, exhaust, throttle body spacer, etc...).

I agree, but it will show me "plus" or "minus" based on previous runs, which is what I am after. I am still gonna go and get a dyno for kicks though.
