Scion HU power requirement

I recently purchased a 2005 SR5 and am in the process of doing the Scion HU update and eventually hard wiring XM to the vehicle.

I purchased a T1804 head unit on ebay and changed out the old unit only to find that the unit would not power up, but their is a hiss from the speakers meaning that there is power. I also noticed if I tried to push the "toggle switch" I really couldn't feel and click of a switch inside on two of the locations, and it appeared to be bent perhaps in shipping. I emailed the seller and told him we might have a problem or damaged shipment. He responded that the 2005 4Runner power output to the HU is 5 volts (?) and not 12 volts (?) which the Scion HU requires and that is why the unit will not fully power up. I have talked to a number of installation shops around here, and they don't know anything about a 4Runner's power to the HU being low.

Anyone have any similiar problems, or is this unit just broke?

I think you have a bad unit....mine was plug and play. Even the stock speakers sounded much better with the Scion unit.

Yeah, like they all said, i bet you have a bad unit. Try sending it back. If everything was hooked up correctly there is no reason it wouldnt work. Before you try sending it back pull it out and reseat the connectors to make sure nothing is crossed up. Oh, and what toggle switch are you talking about?

I realize that dozens of people have done this , but I guess the obvious question is if the 2005 model is different from previous models. I don't think it is different, but I just wanted to have this verified by others that have done this update. My feeling is that the unit is bad, and as a result I have ordered another unit. If the new unit works, then I have solved the puzzle.

Refering to what "toggle" switch, I am refering to the main silver control on the front of the unit. When I push one corner to say turn on AM I feel a switch click, but when I push the SAT switch, I feel nothing. As I said it appears to be bend inward, but I don't know if that is normal or not.

Ah, i see. Well as long as sit IS changing modes when you push it, i would say that is working normal. Not sure about being bent. And it wont do anything if you hit sat unless you have something hooked into that port on the back. Good luck with the new one.

Mine came from a 2005 model Scion, so that can't be the cause.

On mine, you get the tactile feedback when you press any of the 4 directions.

Sounds like more evidence you have a bad unit. Hope the seller makes it right for you.

He is claiming that the 2005 4Runner standard HU has a built in power supply to take the 5 volts from the truck and turn it into the required 12 volts. So he claims that if you put the Scion HU in a 2005 4Runner, there is not enough power to turn the unit fully on.

Scion in an 05'

Mine worked fine when I plugged it in, no other requirements.
Scion mdl 1805..........05 4Runner.
I will be taking it out again when I connect harness for an ipod.

Jeez, I hope you are wearing tall boots, cause that BS is getting deep. Why would Toyota knowingly reduce the power to 5 volts, only to have to push it back up to 12 volts?

It was probably broke before he shipped it, and he was trying to screw you over. You are just getting the run-around now.

It's plug-n-play, no converters, no special wiring, plug it in and go. I have a T1804 in my 2004 and it works perfectly. They didn't change anything in 2005 with regard to stereo power supply.

If you have a multimeter, check out the voltage for yourself.

Well, I received my new head unit and it went right in and powered up without any problems.

I will now deal with returning the old unit and getting my refund.

Sounds like the seller is treating you right and that all is going to work out OK.

Well now that I have my Scion HU running, tonight I installed a Toyota XM receiver thanks to the advise that I have received on this forum. So far I must say it does sound considerably better than my Skyfi2 unit that I was using before.

Now on to the next obstacle, does anyone know how or where to get an owners manual for a Scion HU, because I am sure that there are features that I have not yet figured out.

I haven't found the manual, either. I asked the seller I bought mine from and the response was that there isn't one. Makes me wonder if it's part of the Scion owners manual.
