Scion HU - retains OEM aux input jack in console?

Scion HU - how to retain OEM aux input jack in console - SOLVED

Hi all -- first post here (been lurking awhile and reading up) -- couldn't find an answer to this, so thought I'd start up a new thread:

I have an '08 4Runner with the non-JBL stereo, and with the factory aux input jack located in the center console. I just picked up a Scion T1808 head unit in hopes of a cheap upgrade in the sound quality, and easy plug-n-play installation. Posts in the giant Scion HU thread say that all the 4R steering wheel controls remain functional --

But what about the factory aux input jack? Does that still work, if I install the Scion HU? I don't have an ipod, so I'm not installing the ipod connection cable to the HU (have a Zune instead; just using that through the factory jack).

Thanks - Karl

Updated - 5-11-08 -- SOLVED -- follow the link in my post to the Scion Life forum. I installed the 1808 Scion stereo today, using a SC12235 ebay cable for an ipod, and did the 1K-ohm resistor mod to the Toyota harness that is described in the Scion Life forum. I have ipod control AND the aux input jack functions normally.

Only difference between the 4R wiring and the Scion Life info is color of the wires in the Toyota harness, to which the resistor is attached. The wires are in the same place as in the Scion Life instructions -- just different colors. Works great.

I put the same one in my 2007 and I lost the ability to use my AUX jack. I have an iPod and the iPod cable so I really don't mind. I'm not really sure why it doesn't work. I would like to have it work. If anyone can come up with a solution that would be sweet.

Without reading anything more than is contained in these two posts, I will make an educated guess based on my experience and familiarity with the Scion HU's.

Since the wiring harnesses for the factory stereos in all Toyotas has basically been the same since '89 (with a few exceptions - the JBL equipped 4th gen 4runner is one), I would surmise that the aux input is actually wired correctly. My guess is that the resistor that the Scion HU's use to detect whether or not the aux input is there is either missing or the incorrect value.

To figure this out, you would have to do some interior disassembly. I would start out by looking at the aux input jack part and whether or not there is a resistor in there. The correct value should be 2.2k Ohm (red/red/red for a standard resistor, and usually 22 for a surface mount). Next, I would trace the wires from the jack to the harness plug where it connects into the stereo, and make sure the pins are all in the correct location in the plug (I'm pretty confident they will be).

There should be a total of 3-4 wires - Ground, +L signal, +R signal, and possibly a signal detect for the resistor. For information about which wires go where in the back of the Scion HU (or the harness plug), see the first part of my T1807 install thread where I made my own Aux input cable that is always detected as "on" (this thread is stickied btw).

That should cover the only two possibilities I can think of why your Aux input doesn't work. If the resistor just plain isn't there, you simply need to go to radio shack and pick up a pack of the correct 1/4 watt resistors and wire one to the correct 2 pins like I show you in the thread I linked.

Hope this works for you! Please let me know if it does (and what you had to do to fix it).

Thanks CO_FlyFisher - I was hoping it would be an easier fix than soldering, but I guess that wouldn't be too bad if it works.

Not sure if you would have to do any soldering or not; it depends on how the wires are in there and what value the resistor is (if there is one). If it is the wrong value, you could also just install another resistor in parallel to get the correct value.

If you find out and need any further assistance, just let me know.

Update: haven't tried this yet (actually just bought an ipod, and ordered that $70 cable from ebay), but this looks promising:

Apparently the fix to get the ipod interface AND the aux input jack to work, is to install a resistor across the back of specified terminals on the radio. Details here:

pp.6-7 of this thread have good info:

5-11-08 update (updated my original post too) --

FOLLOW THE SCION LIFE FORUM INSTRUCTIONS -- they explain everything you need to do, to use both an ipod and retain use of the aux input jack in the center console.

Hi olsen_karl,

I followed the directions regarding the 1-ohm resistor and i still couldn't get the aux input jack to work. (The iPOD works great but Aux devices don't). I also have the T1808. I did notice the colors are different but matched the locations of where to insert the resistor according to the picture on the Scion life forums. any advice for me? Thanks!

You have to REALLY jam that resistor in place. And it doesn't feel all that secure once in place -- once I could get an "AUX" reading off the stereo, I taped the resistor to the rest of the wires with electrical tape. So far, it's stayed in place.

Karl,
I am about the attempt the same feat. I hope I have the same luck with the AUX port! The posts I read didn't explain it 100% so I might have to ask for help when I get there. One thing I have never seen covered here is the XM antenna. Did you have to buy one and install it? Is everyone using a Toyota part or aftermarket for this??

Thanks,
Chunkee

The AUX jack still functions on my stereo, several months later.

I don't have an XM antenna installed. IIRC, there's a Toyota-specific part to buy to get it to work with the Scion HU.

I just wanted to add another success story to this posting. Last week, I installed a Scion T1807 ($39 brand new on eBay) in my 07 SR5 that had the base non-JBL system. It was 100% plug and play and the auxiliary port in the console works perfectly without any modifications at all. The improvements in sound quality and power are noticeable but not terribly impressive. Either way it's definitely worth it for a low effort, low cost modification that retains the factory looks.

thread revival: Scion AUX fix for 1808 stereo

This fix works. I did my install a few years ago and I posted it up here in the main thread. However, about 2 years ago I realized that my AUX function was not working. It was not being recognized.
I took out the switch and spent a few hours looking for problems with the switch. They are apparently known to wear out. I was determined to get it working, but now I was second guessing myself, and I wondered if it had ever worked.
I found a replacement AUX switch in a Yaris, but that didn't work. I went back and pulled the AUX harness, still no worky.
Finally, I went and got the resistors and put one between 19 and 14 on the plug. Wham-O! I had AUX again, or maybe for the first time.
Final notes: the AUX plug that you plug your device into, has a resistor in it. I am wondering if it broke, or the solder failed and that's why the resistor on the back of the plug restored my AUX feature.
Done..again..

EDIT:
Everything worked for about 1500 miles and then it quit recognizing that a device was plugged in. I'm going to go through the same checks. Maybe the resistor wiggled loose or now the switch is bad.
