Scratched & Dent

My father-in-law backs up to head to the bank, and this happened. He hit my truck with his car. I dont know all the details my wife just sends me this picture, and said "my dad scratched the runner" It looks like a dent towards the front of the fender also. Does anyone know how much it would be to replace everything, or do I even have to replace anything? He said that he would pay for everything, but if it gets too much, he said that he will get his insurance to pay for it. Any advice on wut to do about this? Thanks

hey am sorry abt that, the best thing to do is look up some body shops near where you live and just drive it down and get them to have a look. Tell them you need an estimate and that there is no insurance involved - they usually jack up the price if i'ts an insurance claim. Looking at it, they should be able to fix it lie new in a couple of days, a week at most! Good luck.

sorry to hear about the damage, doesnt look to bad, Id take it to a body shop, they probley could buff it out and look new again, it does look like a little dimple on the fender, I bet you could pop that right out, just remove the fender liner. The fender flare looks like it will buff out with very little work.

My bumper and fender flare was similary scratched by someone pulling from parking stall and cutting in front of my T4R (no dents). Insurance cover it re-painting bumper and flare for $800 СDN

Can't tell how bad the paint is on the fender. But if buffs out, you're better off having a PDR (paintless dent removal) guy take care of the fender. The flare looks scratched deeply. The flare comes painted from the factory, part # 53848-35120-A0 is white. Runs about $295 from Partznet.com. Fender unpainted, part # 53802-35670, about $202, also from Partznet.com.

BTW, it seems like his car was pretty high to inflict damage up there.

It was his side view mirror she tells me. So we call his ins. company yesterday, and they want us to take it to a body shop they choose to get it appraised, which is normal I think. But isn't it my choice where I want the work done? I want to take it to the Toyota dealership where I bought my truck, they have their own bodyshop.

You should be able to provide a couple quotes from where you want to get the work done.

They are sending you to a direct repair shop. One that will fix the truck based on their estimate without the need to send out someone from the ins co to look your truck over. You can, and should take it somewhere you are comfortable with. Typically the direct repair shops are very reputable.

I had a brand new Tacoma and barely 2 months into ownership, a women backed into the quarter panel (along the bed) on the passenger side. The scratch and dented area looked very similar to yours, covering about the same area, except my dent was a big bigger. The estimates I got were $800 and a $1000. I went with the $1000 only because I wasn't paying for it and felt more comfortable with the shop.

That big scratch on the fender might able to be easily fixed with a pre-painted factory part. You can take that piece off yourself and replace it.

But either way that fender has to be fixed, which means painting the whole piece, after pulling the dent, a little grinding, bondo, sanding, primer and paint.

I would guess if you just had them fix/paint the fender, you're looking at $500-$600. If you're taking them the entire thing as-is, $800-$900.

You should be able to take it to any shop of your choice. The insurance company won't be happy about it, but it's not going to affect your father-in-law's deductible either. Also, insist on them using OEM parts. Some insurance companies will try to skate by with aftermarket parts.
