Scratches from Dealership

Hi Guys,

I just purchased my '03 LTD 4Runner. The day I picked up my car, it was raining, so I was not able to inspect the exterior of the car as well. After the rain cleared, I found a few noticable scratches on the door and window. Is it normal for this to happen coming off the lot? Is there anything the dealship can do for me? My car also had 72miles on it when I picked it up. Shouldn't the milage be lower?

No, it's not normal to have scratches on your new car. The dealership can use touch-up paint or buff it out for you. Just make an appointment with your salesman/service guy.

72 miles are not bad. It just means that it was used for testdriving or it was delivered (via someone driving it) from another dealership.

It is unlikely that you can do anything about the 72 miles. I would not worry about it. Enjoy your car. If anything, mention it to your salesman and service guy about that fact. Document it in your owner's manual. That way, you have some proof that your car had 72 miles on it when you got it...just in case, you have problems with it down the road.

The truck engines (V6 and V8) are extremely durable and tough. Don't worry about the 72 miles.

Document your scratches with pictures before you take it to the dealer. Then when they have "so-called" fixed it, and let's hope they do, you can see where they were "supposed" to be. If they screw it up even worse, you have documented proof in pic form. Never hurts to be safe than sorry.

Never pick-up a new car on rainy day or at night. Too easy to miss scratches and dents.

Sux to hear that you're 4runner had some scratches. Just take them into your dealer and POLITELY ask to have them buffed out I'm sure they won't mind doing it for ya.

As for the 72 miles, it really doesn't matter that much. It's better to get one with 1-2 miles but hey, as long as its now your 4runner who cares Most vehicles are usually under 10 miles but sometimes the dealer will let potential customers drive the vehicle (test drive) so this might be the case. Regardless, it is nothing to be overly concerned over.

I picked mine up at night even though I told them I wanted to wait until the AM so I could check it out better. They did put it under halogen lights but I still didn't like that and told them i wanted a guarantee that iif I found anything in the natural light it would be fixed. Sure enough next AM I found a small scratch on the passenger side and a scratch on front bumper. These were not easily seen and seemed to be dependent on how light was hitting those areas. Both scratches were touched up. My vehicle had 96 miles on it when I purchased it It did come from another dealership so that is probably how it got most of its miles. I, too, would have preferred lower mileage but I knew that this had been driven from another dealer and I am sure that it was test driven by a few people. I think it may have been mishandled a bit since there have been a few minor problems but they are being resolved.

Do contact your dealer regarding the scratches. Hopefully, they will be taken care of.
