Seabee's 5th Gen Tire Carrier

Thanks for the praise and "likes" guys - Seabee did an incredible job. I forgot to mention that it also has a high-lift jack mount behind the spare I just haven't picked mine up yet.

I'm driving up to Ontario on Thursday so when I get back in 10 days I'll have a good report on how well it is holding up!
 
Do you lose any departure angle with the tire carrier? It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures. I'm liking the design. I've been wanting to relocate my tire so I can free up that space for other things I'd like some space to mount.

I've lost a little bit of departure angle but the nice thing is that it almost acts like a rear slider. That sucker is tucked up under the bumper as close as it can and is tucked up behind the bumper really well. I've only banged it once while offroading and its held up fine.

I'll try and get some pics sometime over the next week of the attachment points. It mounts up against the frame using pre-existing holes...think about where the tow loop is on the driver side and where the trailer harness is. Those holes are used.

Really? (not meaning to be mean or questioning or anything, just an honest question)

It's above your trailer hitch, which is where my TE hangs up when I am not siding across the rear of the spare. Both my spare is badly scuffed and my trailer hitch is dinged from bad departures.

I saw this setup in person at the meet in Annapolis, and yes, it's as nice as it can be and still be a bolt-on mod. The hinge setup and stuff is definitely hard to do.

So much want.
 
Perhaps the group can convince Seabee to post a link to more pictures and details as well as a price. If there was enough interest, what kind of group discount could be achievable?

I've been a bad friend and haven't called Seabee in a while. I need to get in touch with him. Last I heard he was working like crazy and also doing a few projects for his own 4Runner, including a really really sweet offroad trailer.

I don't want to put words in his mouth but I know he wanted to only make these things for people who were local. Shipping was a pain / expensive and I know he enjoys the design process with the person. I had a lot of fun going down there on the weekends he was building it and enjoying a few beers and learning a little about welding.

I'll give him a call and see what he thinks.

Sorry, don't know what you're asking. Really that I've hit the carrier / Lost departure angle?

The bars that bolt on to the frame are as low as the hitch and the carrier piece sits on top of those bars that mount up. That plus adding a few inches off the back away from the rear tires has sacrificed a bit of the angle but like I said, they act like sliders, its a stout piece.

big fan of the bumper. im in arlington, and was wondering when id see that truck. finally caught it at whole foods yesterday. looks good. is your buddy still making them?

Haha yeah that was me...I actually think I've caught your truck on the highway....do you happen to run an aluminum bike carrier on the back with a dirtbike? This was like a year ago on route 50...

Funny you saw me at whole foods...I want to reference the "poser" thread going on right now - never know when you'll need your tire carrier and hi-lift mount while buying organic!

I checked in with Seabee around the holidays and he has just been real real busy / possibly getting transferred so he hasn't had the time to even work on his own projects. If I hear he will be producing anymore I'll be sure to post on here and let everyone know.

I'll try and take some more pictures soon and update the thread, I'll need to post pics of the new LED reverse lights I just mounted to it anyway.

Seabee only made a handful of these and ultimately had to stop because it just became overwhelming. He's just an average guy who made his own tire carrier as a winter project in his garage. After folks on 120 bugged him to make some for them as well he attempted to fulfill some orders on his free time.

I think the majority of folks were pleased with their product - at least one was not so happy. "Returns" and redesigns for this particularly difficult individual pretty much caused him to stop bc money was just coming out of his own pocket to ship things back and forth cross country (he was located in VA). No point wasting his free time and money. He was only one man in his garage.

Anyway, the very last I heard he wasn't willing to do any more of these unless the folks were local. I'm still loving the carrier, it held up to some serious abuse in Moab and is still in great shape. I removed it this past winter to repaint it and its solid.

I can't get low enough under my 4Runner to have my camera focus on how its bolted on...if you focus right above the wiring loom area of the first pic you can see how its bolted on flush with the frame. The second pic just shows the bolts.

4Shore, on a couple of the photos of the left side of your truck at the beginning of this thread, there appear to be two mounts attached to the factory rail. Are they for a hi-lift jack? And if so, do you have close ups and source for them? That's exactly what I want to have for my jack-mounts on the outside of the factory rails. Any info would be really appreciated.

And your bumper! Awesome. A friend in the steel fabrication business and I are discussing it - your design and execution are first rate.

Hey John - they are just the factory tie downs for the TE roof rack - did yours not come with them? Thanks for the props! I can only take credit for having the only one on a 5th gen, otherwise the credit goes to Seabee!

I grabbed this photo from a roof rack thats currently for sale...see the stock tie downs that go along the rail. I'm sure you could fabricate something that slides into the factory rack, I just don't know how strong it is.

Don't loose that bag, I read that they are near impossible to buy from the dealer!
