Seafoam

What is the correct way to use this stuff? Every single thread I read about it says something different.

1) How many miles do you drive when putting seafoam into the oil? I read that some people drive for 10-20 miles while others just let the engine idle for 5 minutes before changing the oil.

2) How many miles do you drive until all of the seafoam is out of the system?

3) I read that you are supposed to slowly pour the seafoam in using an IV like bag (like they have in hospitals) so that it mixes well.

Just follow directions on the bottle.

IMHO, I'd pour some in and drive to the dealership (approx 7 miles) and have an oil change. And pour the rest of it in the gas tank. Does it matter how you pour it in there? It's gonna end up either in the crankcase or gas tank.

I used seafoam religiously on my markviii and always administered through an intake line attached to the PCV. Let the engine take most of it in and I was advised to let the engine stall out but I could never get that to happen. Let sit for 20min, come back and watch the show! You will have huge plumes of thick white smoke coming out of your exhaust. I have been told this is all the carbon deposits being burned off.

Have not done this to my 4runner yet, though.

Best point of entry is the brake-booster vacuum line. I just disconnect it from the booster, turn it upward and use a small funnel to guide the SEAFOAM in without a mess.

Don't pour it in too quickly or you can cause hydrolock........engine disaster.


It is hard to stall the engine, but if you can, do let it sit for an hour or so and then come back out for the show.

I suggest changing oil pretty soon afterwards. You don't want to chance running with diluted oil.

:iagree: I syphon it out of the can through a very small diameter piece of vinyl tubing. That way I can kink the tube to provide the desired flow rate.

This is how I've done it. The brake booster vacuum line provides an unbelieveable amount of vacuum, sucks the seafoam right in.

I have also put it in the gas tank, but have been unable to realize any benefit this way.
I've gone so far as to run the tank down to quarter tank and then added 2 full bottles and run the tank as dry as I dare and still didn't feel any benefit.

for those wondering the point of entry on the v8 is under the engine cover on the left side of the throttle body. I took the hose off and put a straw (yes a plastic straw) in the can and the other end i would just ease over towards the tube and let it suck it up nice and slow. I did about half a pint and let it sit for 15 minutes and then cranked it and smoked out the neighborhood. I only got about two minutes of smoke though because i'm just at 50k on the clock. I also put the other half pint in the crank case and a full pint in a full tank of gas. i put about 30 miles on it and will be getting the oild changed tomorrow.

it's doing good. I can't say that I noticed any huge improvements because my engine only had ~45k on it when I did it. It's hard to tell if it made any difference in gas mileage because when I did it temperatures outside were in the teens consistently. Now that we've warmed up to 40's and 50's I've seen a signifacnt increase in mileage just based on outside temps.
