Thank you chitown40, no offense here. I wonder why how people say "the engine runs like never before" or "my idling improved and stabilized and engine works quiet now" when they used Seafoam in engine oil and throttle body. As I see it if Seafoam would not help people nobody would even use it otherwise or do I miss something? How people swear that it helped them eliminate issues?
In my case I used it because I had an early morning knocking noise that Toyota dealership eliminated as piston slap/exhaust manifold leak and could not explain to me what it was. I used Seafoam to try to fix this issue. I know for the fact (I was given a printed history of all maintenance records) that the original owner changed the oil twice longer than it should be that might relate to the knocking issues due to carbon buildup in the engine.
BTW I do not have the airplane noise while driving for the last couple days.
This is the placebo effect.
People will believe what they want to believe. Just like when someone installs the Tornado intake vortex generator or the magnets on their fuel lines, or a cold air intake, or a deckplate mod, etc. They will believe they now have a more powerful engine or they are getting better fuel economy, and so on and so forth.
There is no quantifiable measurement that proves that seafoam does anything. It's a solvent/chemical like all the rest. And it has its uses. But it doesn't fix strange noises or internal engine problems, or even clean an intake for that matter.
Here's the perfect example. You think since your car has over 100k that the intake is dirty, so you suck some seafoam through it. You get the placebo effect and think since you saw white smoke that it cleaned junk out of your intake. BTW, who can correctly tell me what color smoke is created from carbon burning? Probably not white... Anyway, you decide, wow, what a difference it made since it shot white smoke out the tailpipe and you assume its burning off carbon. So, now you decide to do it again, and then again, and now every oil change. Oh wait! I can also put it in my oil and my fuel system? This stuff is magic! And who ends up winning in the end? The Seafoam manufacturer. How many people on here wrote about problems after seafoaming their engine? 3 or 4 out of 100? Think about than percentage in a larger sample. More people damage their engines rather than fixing anything. I also guarantee that nobody pulls their intake off after a lifetime of seafoaming their intake and has a clean intake. Any good mechanic will tell you that the problem way to remove carbon deposits is removal and good 'ole elbow grease.
