Seal driver

I need to replace the axle seals in my front diff. can anyone recommend a good seal driver kit? I don't have any that are large enough for these seals. thank you

I wish I had a good answer for you but I don't. And while I think it's kinda bad how the other guys hijacked your thread with silly pictures, I have to admit that this may ultimately help you by keeping this thread alive and at the top where more people will see it.

To that end, I submit my own version of a proper seal driver. It's from the U.K. apparently.

I'm sorry we got off track. I've used large sockets, pipes, or whatever was around to make seal drivers. I don't think I'd invest a lot of money into a set. If you're set on it (see what I did there?), then just get the cheap HF set or rent one.

I've always used PVC pipe. Just go to lowes with the seal and find a fitting that fits around the seal. I don't like to use seal drivers because of the funnel thing on the seals, PVC lets you slip around it.

I went to Auto Zone looking for the proper driver to rent, which they didn't have. The clerk steered me to the tailpipe section, and for $2.00 I bought a short tailpipe union of the right diameter that worked perfectly. They tend to have sharp edges, so I ran it over the grinder first.

PVC pipe is also a good idea - cheap and relatively easy on the seal itself.

Seal driver is NOT so good.
I used it to drive seals and it is VERY hard to hit right in the middle to drive the seal parallel to the surface. Most of the time one side of the seal is lifted up.

I use the hand, and set the seal symmetrically in its location. Then with a rod (wood is ideal), I hammer it in 4 opposite places until it sits in the location.

pull the old seal out, cut it on one side with a dremel to give it just enough of a reduced circumference and use it as a seal driver. Use a large socket to tap it against the new seal.
