I never thought of putting the switch right there, seems like alot less wiring!! I don't see why that would be a problem. I don't know about the airbag light, but my 99 doesn't have side airbags, and I wasn't aware 01's did either...my sisters doesn't! Anyways, just go to the steering column and find this wire: Ignition black/yellow (+) ignition harness
That will be a very reliable 12V ignition source, that way it doesn't overload any circuits, or stay on all the time. The stereo should be fine. If it does need the code, it will be on a card in the owners manual, or you can just take the serial # to the dealer, and they can get the code.... Anyways, good luck, and let us know how it goes!!

Thanks for the power source idea. That looks great to me. Same thing with the stereo code. I'd like to avoid taking it to a $tealership as I'm trying to do this install under the radar as a Christmas present while she's out of town.
The airbag sensor I was referring to is for the standard front airbag. Her SR5 doesn't have side airbags. Since there isn't a place to de/activate the passenger airbag with a key, I was told that there is a sensor under the passenger seat so the airbag will be on only when someone is sitting shotgun. I imagine this is the same sensor that controls the red blinking seatbelt indicator that turns on if someone is in the seat without the belt on.
Does that help to clear up what I'm referring to with the airbag sensor?

I figured thats what you were talking about. That takes a few pounds to activate it. I guess, put the heater on top of the seat, and see if it flips the trigger. If not, then I suppose you're safe.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out what to do if there was a problem with the airbag sensor though. One can't cut or fold the kind of kit that I bought. I wouldn't want to have the airbag always on or always off.
I realize that the airbag switch in the seat is weight-activated, but does anyone know where the switch is or how it works? If the seat requires (for instance) 20 lbs to compress enough that the switch is triggered and I put a heating element between the two pieces of the switch, I can see where that could cause problems. Does anyone know how that switch works?

Some friends from another forum came over last night to help install the seat warmers. Since I was paying them in fluid ounces I didn't mind when they'd not work for awhile or want to BS about whatever. As a result of that - and a rather long discussion about wiring - the total job took somewhere between 4 and 5 hours. That would have been much closer to 3 if A) we had ever done it before or B) had a better feel for the wiring.
When I started the project I took several pictures to help with a full write-up. As the night wore on took fewer pictures and just worked more. I hope to post what I do have sometime in the near future along with a verbal explanation of the wiring situation.
The seat heaters work really well - so far at least. I think she'll be thrilled with them.
