Seat Problem Part 3

Here we go again. The driver's seat in my 06 Sport is back to making creaking and popping sounds and is beginning to move again. I have had it with this crap.

I dropped it off at the dealership this past Monday and basically told them that I wanted the entire seat replaced. This issue has been going on and off for the past year and I'm fed up. The rep told me he completely understands, that they're seeing more and more Runners with this problem, but Toyota is balking at replacing the seats since they cost about $3,600 each. Oh well, not my problem. Toyota makes billions per year, they can replace my seat. I told them I don't want the truck back until the seat is replaced....so we'll see.

In the meantime, they gave me a new FJ to drive. Fun, but I wouldn't ever buy one. Very utilitarian (like a Jeep), lots of wind and tire noise, and the visibility sucks.

Anybody else with this issue?

I am afraid my issues are just beginning. My seat doesn't make noise but it's terribly uncomfortable. The cushion is out of whack and the bars can be felt through the seat. It makes for a miserable ride. You'd think at the price of these vehicles they'd be more comfortable.

I took my '07 sr5 in today for the first time. they called me back 2 hrs later and said it was just loose springs and it was fixed. I doubt it. I am off to pick it up now. Good luck with your replacement.

If I drive my 4Runner for extended periods of time, my butt falls asleep and begins to hurt. Glad it's my wife's daily driver and not mine.....:biggrin2:
 
I had the same problem with my truck. I brought it in 3 or 4 times before the dealer replaced the seat. Not a crack or pop since they replaced the seat frame. The truck is very quiet since the driver's seat and the center console have been replaced.

Why did they replace your center console?
 
After I had my seat rails replaced I haven't had an issue (knocks on wood) and that was a around Dec 2006. Hope you get yours sorted out and hope mine doesn't develop a problem.
 
UPDATE

The Toyota rep called me today (Tuesday 10/23) and said that they ordered a brand new seat - not a seat frame assembly but a whole new seat - and that it should be here by Thursday. Hopefully that will solve the problem once and for all.

Once the seat is installed, I'll post and let everyone know.
 
UPDATE NUMBER 2

The seat frame assembly replacement did not solve the problem. Since I have an open case through the 800 number, the rep told me that Regional is now getting involved. That tells me that I will probably need to end up filing for arbitration and trying to go through the Lemon Law as well.

What the hell has happened to Toyota's quality?

When I initially brought the truck in for various pops and clicks and other noises the dealer checked the seat and the center console. They said the center console was "broke". I'm guessing that meant some of the tabs were broken, but I couldn't tell you more than that. One interesting thing is the first time they replaced the center console, the idiot that installed it put the incorrect insert in. They installed the granite colored insert from the 2005, not the blackwood looking insert for the 2006. I saw it immediately when I sat in the drivers seat. I showed the service manager and he shook his head and cursed appropriately. He apologized profusely and said something about the idiot that installed it would be flogged and such. I replied with "either that or buy them new glasses." :)
 
Ive had my 06 4Runner at the shop twice for the seat squeak/popping issue. Both times all the did was checked and tightened the seat assembly. I took the tech for a ride the first time and he heard the popping noise. The second time they said they couldnt reproduce the noise. They replaced my catalytic converter on the second visit and I have to go back when they get a new O2 sensor.
So on my third trip im gonna take the service tech and manager for a drive. Does anyone got any other ideas on how to put some pressure on them to do something about this? Any TSBs on 06 seat rattle?
 
Yep, that's the TSB I provided to the dealer. They tried it not once, but twice. It still did not solve the problem.

The TSB only works IF the new seat assembly has no flaws. Apparently that is not the case, at least with mine.

Thanks for the link Areaone. Unfortunately my seat is electric. It originally had cloth seats. But the dealer had a leather package installed. I wonder if they screwed something up when they changed the seats out?
 
Update

Well I went to the dealership and took the service tech for a spin around the block thursday. We didnt even make it out of the parking lot when the seat started making popping noises. He said he would order a new seat assembly. I hope this resolves the issue, but I have my doubts.

I also had the catalytic converter replaced last week cause of the sulfer smell. The smell is still there but not as bad the original one.
 
UPDATE NUMBER 3

Got a call from Toyota Customer Care. Apparently, a regional TAC guy is coming from GA to FL next Tuesday to fix the problem. The rep said the dealership guys are good, they are credible (which I agree with, the only time I've agreed when it comes to a dealership, these guys are straight up and professional) but that the TAC guys sometimes know a little bit more about how to fix a problem. He assures me it will be resolved. I'm a bit skeptical but remain optimistic.

And here's the best part. Without any prompting on my part, the Toyota rep says hey, we're very sorry that you've been without your truck for so long (I think it's been 6 weeks already) and we know that you're driving a loaner free of charge, but we will reimburse you one month of your truck payment, which is $774.53. I thought that was pretty cool of them.

Will post results of the fix next week. Keep fingers crossed.
 
I got my new seat frame/assembly installed thursday. The seat feels more solid then the last one. I havent heard any popping noises yet. The tech said the new power seat cost $1400 bucks! I couldnt believe it until he showed me the price on the computer screen.
 
Now what?

Well, I picked my truck up today...and the seat is no better. This is unbelievable. Supposedly a TAC guy came in from Southeast Toyota and did all sorts of stuff that the dealership didn't, and the problem is still there. The seat moves, pops and clicks.

I am so angry right now that all I see is red. This issue probably wouldn't bother a lot of people but it really pisses me off.

Looks like the next step is arbitration or a claim under the Lemon Law.

Anybody else have any ideas or suggestions?
