As some of you might have seen last week I have been trying to solve a problem of mounting a fire extinguisher inside the cab of the 4Runner where it can be accessed by the driver within a few seconds. The only logical spot is the tried and tested spot of behind your calves.

Unfortunately the only way to do this is to utilize the hard points offered by the bolts that hold the front seat rails down.

What this gives you is a sturdy mounting platform designed to hold a large fire extinguisher in place safely without effecting the use of the seat.

If you're particularly short in height you may be limited in exactly how far you can move the seat, but I found no issues with anyone below 5'6".

It installs within minutes, just requiring the foot caps to be removed, taking the bolts out, slipping the plate over, and reinstalling/retorquing back to factory values. The plate can also be drilled out for attaching whatever else you want. It will also work on both sides, and is universal. The plastic foot caps WILL still work but you will need to dremel out some clearances in the front to notch them.

These will be offered in anodized black, and anodizing will cost me 50 dollars for a batch. So if we make 10, it'll be 5 dollars. Price will be 50 dollars + shipping.

So basically I'm going to make at least 1-2 of these (2 for me), and I want to know who'd actually want one (or 2, your call) so we could gauge interest. I'm not going to start selling these so it's likely a limited run for now.

If you're a shorta fella, then no, however at some point you will hit the end of the plate. If you're of average human height, then it will never contact the front of the seat.

That was the compromise on the design.

I'm intrested, tho my lady my have a hard time with it. She's pretty far forward. But I feel like I can get it and do a simple addition to the brackets to fit my needs.

One thing to keep in mind, guys, is that this does NOT have to go on the drivers side. You could mount it on the passenger side if you feel that it would affect you too much. The purpose here is to solve a critical issue a lot of us offroaders have:

1. Many don't carry a fire extinguisher (shame on you).
2. Those who do carry a fire extinguisher...can you access it within 2-5 seconds in case of an interior or exterior fire?

I know that I wasn't able to do so in terms of accessing it. I'm mounting one on each seat so I can carry my Halon behind my calves, and a standard H&R ABC fire extinguisher on the passenger seat, so I can grab both, or a passenger could access one in a pinch.

I love the idea and the design looks great... unfortunately even though I drive with my seat all the way back, I slide both it and the passenger seat all the way forward all the time since my rear sleeping arrangements necessitate moving the seats up and filling the rear passenger footwells with boxes.

I am in once I confirm my seat position tomorrow, I am not below average in height so I should be ok but its raining hard and the truck is in the middle of the parking lot

Is it possible just to cut out the area where it bolts to the seat, so that all it takes is to loosen the bolts a little and slide the bracket on/off? I was thinking this could alleviate some issues with people who need to sometimes make their seat go all the way forward.

Yes it should.

And yes, you could cut it yourself if you wanted, nothing is stopping you from modifying it after the fact.

There is enough Halon in a 2.5lb to displace all of the oxygen inside your 4r, so it's useless to use inside the cab unless you're standing outside, and I certainly wouldn't want to be driving if it was ever accidentally discharged. our local club will not even allow rigs on club runs with one on board. They're popular in the Offroad world because the jeep guys love 'em, but they can run topless - not so much in a 4runner.
I'll stick with my 10lb ABC in the back.

If you had an electrical fire you could certainly use it while bailing out of your car. Would you STAY in your car with an ABC while it was on fire? This is splitting hairs, you'd certainly use it while you extricated yourself from an active interior fire.

This is true but a lot of "what ifs" are involved. I wouldn't carry it all the time, just when on an adventure. If I was to carry one all the time I would use a water fire extinguisher. You can even recharge it on the trail after using assuming you have a compressor. *Remember, something is better than nothing. It would suck to watch your 4Runner burn down.

Have to exit my truck to get my ABC from the back, so that's moot. Being able to fight an electrical fire quickly from the driver's seat is irrelevant if you pass out from oxygen deprivation. Your truck though, mod as you see fit.
