Seatbelt Return Issue? Anyone else....

RHINO-99

Has anyone else been dealing with a seat belt return that is really weak? My driver's side seatbelt doesnt seem to really recoil or return very fast and usually twists in the process leaving it hanging instead of tight against where it should end up?

Has anyone brought their 4runner in to get this fixed? Is it worth it? I do have the extended warranty and it is CPO'd. Any suggestions, feedback, experiences with this would be great.

It's a very common "feature", even on other Toyota products.

I've read about things like taking it apart and cleaning the retractor, but I'm skeptical about that because the recoil is weak even when the car is fairly new.

Both of my 4Runners have weak returns. I have to help them along. My wife just lets hers hang most of the time.
I think it's a 4Runner thing! :D

Ditto, my 1999 has the same problem. Shop wants several hundred to fix it, doesn't sound worth it. I heard if you spray dry lube on the belt it will help. I tried it with some, but nominal improvment.

Mine has that issue but it's not worth the time or money to fix it so I just have to make sure I tuck the belt in most of the time.

There is a fix on the T100 site. As for the Warranty. If it ain't broken, they won't fix it. I fixxed my T100, basicly you file down part of the intake openning and rewind the coil inside. I was pissed that the extended warranty from Toyota wouldn't cover a safety issue. But they won't.

I have been noticing this on my '03 for the last two months, when the temps dropped. The wife just flips hers off and lets it fly, so it tends to twist and jam most of the time. I gave up asking her to go easy, and just straighten it my self. Long ago, when I worked in a Honda shop, they had the same problem with their seat belt retractors, and the recommended fix was to pull the belt out as far as possible, and using warm soap and water, wash the belt to remove any dirt/grease build up on the strap that might stiffen it up over time. This process would work some of the time, other times if the customer was insistant, we would replace the retractor assys.

2023 4Runner TRD Pro Damaged Seatbelts

What's up everyone! New member of this forum!

I bought my 4Runner on 09/23/2022 and I barely found out yesterday that I have a problem with my backseat seatbelts!

My parents were attempting to put on their seatbelts in the back seat but they were meeting resistance. I thought it was because the seatbelt retractor was just jammed up. Then, I attempted to try it out and with less than 25% force I was able to pull it out. When it came out, the seatbelt was ripped apart! I was shocked because I rarely have any backseat passengers. My parents were the second people to sit in my backseat and put the seatbelt on. The first time I had passengers was at the beginning of December and there was no problem at that time. This has to be a manufacturer issue! I contacted a Service Consultant at my local dealership, who said this is not covered under warranty because it is an "outside influence". Has anyone had any issues with this?
