Second Filter in Air Box ?

What is the "permanant" filter in the top of the air-box lid? It doesn't seem to come out. Replacable?

I don't believe it's replaceable.

It's a particulate filter that I believe is supposed to stop carbon emmisions from escaping the motor when it's turned off.

I've also heard that you can remove it with no harm to the engine and you'll gain a few RWHP. I've been meaning to research it before I remove mine.

I haven't took mine out yet. I tried with a butter knife but those rivets bented the knife. Then i tried with a camping knife, i missed and cut my finger. So after replacing my blood-spotted air filter and some band aid, the only thing i can think of is to vacuum the crap out of it.

Mine's been removed for a month or two now. I just simply (and carefully in some spots) drilled out the plastic rivets. Not sure if there's any measureable power gain from this. Butt dyno doesn't really say much to this as it probably can only add a HP or two. Observation has led me to believe that it free revs a little quicker but that's all I can say.

I noticed that filter myself, as I was replacing the old one. I was thinking about removing it, but still undecided if it matter or not on HP or MPG. I’ll do more searching to see what is the outcome with or without.

It’s called the hydrocarbon filter or HCF. Search “HCF delete” to see many, many threads about removing it, which surely improves air flow but doesn’t seem to have much benefit regardless.

The air box is easy to remove and then you can pry it out. It’s a bad idea to try removing it without taking that part off b/c the rivets or other debris could end up in a place where starting the engine sucks them in. You definitely don’t want that.

Easy way - use a soldering iron to melt the plastic rivets and the thing will pop right off.
