Seized caliper

So I took my rig to the stealership because it was pulling right when I would brake hard and I suspected a seized or hanging caliper. Turns out I was right.

However, they tell me I also need new rotors and pads because of it and also because of rust issues which is fine. They also tell me the heat from the seized caliper caused my hub and bearings to warp so I need to replace them also for both sides. They want to charge me $1700 for the pad and rotor replacement and another $1700 for the hub and bearing replacement! I feel that it's a complete ripoff!

I'm in Canada so I feel the markup on OEM parts is insane. My question is can I go to a different shop and use non-OEM parts for much cheaper. And also, has anyone ever heard of needing new hubs and bearings from having s seized caliper?

$3400 for all that work is bullshit to be sure. mainly because each one of those are all done at the same time. Here are American prices on the parts you need

Bearings $169-$175 each (sourced on t4r.org as a complete bolt-on hib assembly) $350
Front rotors: OEMish $110
pads: front and back $90 total for ceramics. Less if you want to.
Calipers: $160 for the pair plus core.

So for $710 American plus tax you have all the parts you need. I would say buy everything you need from rockauto.com and pay an independent to do the work if you don't do your own work. For one guy, working by himself with DIY garage tools this will take about one day. at $100 an hour the is $800.

the dealership is trying to screw you.

I know damn near nothing about doing my own work. And I was able to replace my own seized calipers. Wheel bearings aren't hard, I did that with a little help from my dad on a pickup a few years back.

Regardless of whether or not you can do the work yourself, the stealership is completely trying to screw you. That quote is absolutely absurd.:wtf:

Thank you guys for reassuring what I suspected. I hate stealerships. I have an independent mechanic I am going to go take my rig to. The problem is getting parts cheap in Canada is very difficult. I have to basically order from a U.S. company and have it delivered to Canada and hope for the best with customs and duty. Not all places ship to Canada either.

Guess I will start hunting for parts now because I need this fixed asap!! I might just do the calipers, pads, and rotors first and then order the bolt on hub assemblies and do those later. Isn't there someone in this forum that sells complete hub assemblies?

I hear you about the costs of (Canadian) Toyota OEM parts.

My attitude towards only replacing worn/broken parts with Toyota OEM parts has changed over the years - with some positive experiences with non-oem parts, this is now the route I choose.

I also have a trusted independent mechanic that I take my 4Runner to for service. This also has changed over the years - as I used to have a very good relationship with the service manager and head mechanic at my local Toyota dealership - but those people have since moved on, and I simply do not trust anyone who is there now like I used to.

Both the labour rate and non-oem parts are less expensive than Toyota service and parts. But I trust my mechanic more to install quality parts.

As for your brake issue, I replaced by brake parts with Wagner when my calipers seized with good results.

Perfect Stop by Wagner

These can be sourced in Canada through Maslack Supply (Auto Value). I would also consider NAPA brake parts as well.

I'm South of London, ON. and feel your Canadian pain / I NEVER use $ealerships, for good reason.
- just did back brakes, on wife's 2008 RAV4 Limited v6 / on Friday
- i got the MaxBrakes ELITE xDS Series Combo Brake Kit (front & rear) shipped to my door, for $250 Canadian = $125 in 2 wheel premium rotors & ceramic pads ELITE xDS Series Combo Brake Kit
- and my independent garage & good friend, charged me 2.0 hours labor / de-rust caliper pins & ceramic lube, plus change rotors & pads / my top mechanic, is very skilled...only guy that works on my vehicles
(a dishonest garage would have told me my 1 caliper was seized
- only pins were sticking and cleaned up perfectly
)
Total Parts & Labor = $125 + $150 = $275 to redo my back RAV4 brakes.
- the garage I use, is a 2 hour drive from TO airport / he already has several customers, from Toronto, that like to save $$

I just went to Port Huron, MI on Saturday / picked up a 3 point hitch for my 1992 John Deere 318. Cross boarder shopping to CanAm Parcel Pickup, on Lapeer road (Frank's phone 1-810-519-2004). Avoid expensive broker fees & added ship charges.
- last month I saved $562 minus $208 = $354 on 2 Jeep floor pans (fronts)
- luckily, only takes me 1 hour to get into Sarnia, and cross into States
Also on Saturday, I picked up my WIX Platinum 51516XP synthetic oil filter for T4R / saved $20, avoiding local NAPA-UAP.
^^ It all adds up !!

On my Gen3 2000 4Runner SR5 - when time for brakes, I will be upgrading to 2005 Tundra Calipers & Rotors.

For Canadian auto parts purchases - I have used Prime Choice Auto Parts, in Ottawa. 1-866-990-3871
- recently bought upper & lower ball joints, for my 1996 Jeep Cherokee...Kit was $56 / $ealership was $600, for parts alone
^^ Sure beats white box crap, at a fraction of the price !!

Where in the GTA are you? check out National Auto parts National Auto Parts ? Source for New Auto Parts and/or ct Motorsports Home page both are in Mississauga

National is a bit of a hoarder but he's very quick, reliable and cheaper than most other places. They are usually cheaper than or equal to using Rock Auto. Calipers were $79 last time I had to replace one

Thanks for the heads up in national auto parts. It's too late now because I had to get it fixed rather quickly since it's my DD. I couldn't even drive it because it would heat up the rotor so bad that smoke would come from the wheel after like a mile.

I ended up going to an independent mechanic and paying $2000 for parts and labor. New calipers, pads, rotors, and bearings. All in the front end only. I was under the impression i should go oem with most parts so that's what I did.

$2000 seems wayyy high to me... I haven't done wheel bearings on the 4runner yet though. Maybe they are more involved than my S10 was...
