Don't get 3 ways for the front. They just don't sound very good. Make sure that you get a component set for the front.

I would probably just get 2 ways for the back.

Are you going to amp these?

Yes, but not at the moment. HU and front speakers first. Then rear speakers, amp and sub after that.

Most people would generally recommend amping component speakers - they require more power than coaxials do. Crutchfield warned not-amping them might even lead to damage because they'd be underpowered - though I don't know how much that is true. Something to think about.

Components are definitely the way to go though - I'm getting some three-way components put in this week.

I'm pretty positive that you can't damage a speaker by underpowering it.

Basically, the short story is that so long as there isn't clipping/distortion, you are unlikely to damage your speakers - which is about what I believed.

But your component speakers sure won't sound as nice without amps!

Exactly.

If I were you I would probably just buy components for up front and 2 ways for the back.

I would amp the components and power the rears with the HU.

This would save money and would probably sound almost as good.

That sounds like a good compromise - you really don't need components in the rear. Though powering the rears would still be a good idea if you can swing it.

I'm wrestling with the same question. I just installed a new Pioneer head (see my post here: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37892 ) but don't intend to install an amp. I wanted to take advantage of the tweeter location in the door of my 2005, so have been looking at the components with Crutchfield's recommendation:
http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?g=410&i=023GTC652&tp=106

I'd probably put some 2 ways in the rear, but am waiting on that whole "economic stimulus" thing to come through...

wouldnt that overpower the rear?

No. I have my STOCK speakers running off my aftermarket HU and they are fine. You will be suprised at the difference just upgrading the HU will make. I know that the Scion HU's are pretty cheap, but you might want to look into getting a different brand such as Alpine or Pioneer. They offer many more features that will make adding components or subs sound and perform a lot better.

Just my opinion though.

What he said. ;):

Seriously though, even with the HU dedicated to the rear speakers, you'd be talking about max of 40ish watts RMS per speaker -and probably a good deal less. It should be fine.

These components don't have much in the way of power requirements: 2-50 watts RMS and a pretty good efficiency rating of 91dB, meaning you'd need even less power to get at the same volume as another, less efficient speaker. A good way to get away with components without an amp and without breaking the bank.

That HU looks very cool though!

That looks like a nice HU.

If I were you I would not buy those components. Blaupunkt is not known for very good speakers. I would also tend to steer away from Crutchfield when buying speakers. Don't get me wrong I really like Crutchfield. They have really good customer service, I even bought my HU from them. I just feel like you can get speakers for a better price else where.

For about $10-15 more you could buy some PG RSD's. They are really really popular right now. They are supposed to be really good. I might even buy a pair in the future.

I'm leaning toward the Blaupunkts for 3 reasons...1. price is right (and Crutchfield will give me 10% off since I bought the HU there) 2. Built in crossover, so I don't have to mess with mounting a crossover somewhere and 3. They're sure to be a step up from stock...

I think 1 and 3 are great reasons to go with these units - I'd be hesitant about singing the virtues of built-in cross overs, however. 4Runners have plenty of space to hide those suckers.

But I'm sure you're right, they'll probably sound like a nice improvement over the stock speakers.

1. I personally wouldn't sacrifice sounding good for less than $20, but I guess that's just me.

2. Are you going to install these? If not and even if you are an external crossover wouldn't be that much extra work.

3. The PG RSD's are sure to be a step up also.

Here is a review of them: http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=264644&highlight=PG+RSD's+good

In conclusion I don't want to try to change your mind. Do what you feel comfortable doing and stick with it. Either way I'm sure you will see a difference from stock.

I agree that even though a "Built in" crossover sounds cool, it will probably not produce the best results.

Does the amp thats on a JBL subwoofer run just the sub or the whole system. Can it be added to a non JBL setup

Are you talking about a 4th Gen?

I have a '98 and it had a stock amp that was running the speakers. When I upgraded my HU I had to disconnect the amp and just use my HU. Doing this sounds a lot better than stock.

I'm not sure about this, but I would say that there is a amp for the whole system. Even if there are one or two amps I'm pretty sure that you cannot add other sub to the mix. You could probably put in new door speakers and they would still run of the original amp, assuming you had the stock HU.
