September 2007 U.S.Auto Sales Seen Down Slightly

DETROIT, Oct 1, 2007; Jui Chakravorty writing for Reuters reported that U.S. auto sales are expected to have slipped slightly in September, reflecting the drag from the weak housing market and mushrooming consumer debt, analysts said on Monday.

Vehicle sales, widely watched as a leading indicator of U.S. consumer spending, began slowing in the second quarter and are expected to remain under pressure for the remainder of the year.

"We expect ... concerns related to declining home values, stock market volatility, and deterioration in the labor market continue to weigh on spending," Goldman Sachs analyst Robert Barry said in a note to clients.

When automakers report September sales on Tuesday, Ford Motor Co is expected to post the biggest drop in percentage terms. The second-largest U.S. automaker is seen having sales down as much as 18 percent.

Several analysts expect General Motors Corp's September sales to have fallen about 3 percent, but Lehman Brothers analyst Brian Johnson expects the automaker's sales to have risen 5 percent, driven by incentives on pickup trucks.

The two-day nationwide strike by GM's 73,000 factory workers last week is not expected to have hurt sales. The automaker clinched a tentative labor contract with the United Auto Workers union last Wednesday.

Analysts expect the strike to have cost GM about 25,000 vehicles in lost production, a small enough disruption to have been readily absorbed by available dealer stocks of cars and light trucks.

"(The) UAW strike doesn't appear to have hurt GM's sales," said Michelle Krebs, senior editor of AutoObserver.com.

The last major UAW strike against GM was an eight-week walkout at two Flint, Michigan plants in 1998 that shut down GM production. GM never recovered its pre-strike U.S. market share of 31 percent, losing more than 6 percentage points since.

"But this time around, the strike was over well before GM's inventory got low enough to frustrate shoppers," Krebs said.

Chrysler LLC's sales are expected to have fallen between 3 percent and 7 percent, according to analysts.

Toyota Motor Corp, on track to replace GM as the top global automaker this year, is expected to mark its third consecutive monthly sales drop, its first such decline since early 2003.

Toyota is expected to have seen a decline in passenger cars due to a model changeover at its youth-oriented Scion and supply constraint for several strong-selling models, including the Corolla sedan and the subcompact Yaris.

"Toyota's light truck sales should be down even more, as the steady performance of the new Tundra (fueled by high incentives) failed to offset large declines in the company's aging large SUV lineup," Lehman's Johnson said.

September had 25 selling days, one fewer than the same month a year earlier.

Adjusted on that basis, annualized sales are expected to come in between 15.8 million and 15.9 million units for September, down from 16.6 million units a year earlier, analysts said.

U.S. auto sales slipped by just under 1 percent in August, a smaller decline than some analysts had expected as discount programs at GM and other major automakers helped spur sales in the face of slack demand.

U.S. automakers have said they are keeping inventories leaner and cutting production sooner to avoid fire-sale showroom discounts, but the recent weakness in sales has heightened the focus on incentive programs.

All three U.S. automakers are expected to have used incentives to clear inventory in September, with Chrysler having been the most aggressive.

First off, Ford is not # 2.

Toyota's US sales dropped 6/10ths of 1% this Sept. compared the all-time best Sept. (Last Sept), with 1 less day of sales. PLEASE!

Tundra is at an all-time best sales record (61% increase).

I promised myself I would NOT post anymore in these topics but it needed to be said.

And Tundra is still distant from the truck leaders...but you knew that already. :D I think that the Tundra sales went down this month too compared to last month.

Remind me, how did Toyota/you come up with 61%?? Was it compared to last year's previous gen?? And please, don't make me embarrass you...again!:bash: Let's compare actual sales figures for September 2007...Tundra vs. Ford F150 vs. Chevy Silver/GMC vs. Dodge Ram. (these are approx. figures.)

Ford F-series = 56,000
Chevy Silverado = 52,500
Dodge Ram = 30,000
Toyota Tundra = 19,500
GMC Sierra = 18,500

It looks like the only one that Toyota is beating is the GMC Sierra...and it's been back and forth between the two. The Tundra is nowhere near taking over the MAJOR players, much less "kicking ass and taking names." :D

Don't forget that the Sierra and the Silverado are basically the same truck.

Agree. The Sierra is like the semi-Lexus version of the Silverado...and thus, is a small volume seller. Basically, despite the hoopla over the Tundra, it is still in last place among truck sales (as it has always been). Toyota is pumping up incentives just like the domestics...so, i really wonder what this does to resale value...in other words, resale value probably will be just as bad as the domestics.

if toyota wants to be number 1, they should start off building by making their vehicles shittier, like ford.. or chevy... or dodge....

It amazes me the "buy american", "f150 best selling p/u" BS that a lot of people buy into. I AM SOO GLAD that I got a TOYOTA, ESP one that was BUILT IN JAPAN.
Im a big tundra fan (prev gen esp) but once I heard that they were primarily produced IN the united states then I basically lost my respect.
When I was in the wee stages of getting my T4R, basically ending research and nearing ordering, my good friend was doing basically the same. he had just gotten an 04 f150 2wd (long story short, dad made him get 2wd;-)) and he would always push the jargon on me, 'dont you want somethign american made?' and I would always say "Def. not!" and go into the long schpiel about how I was GLAD that the 4R is a japanese built vehicle...

I have heard him say a couple times "i should have gotten a tundra" :bigok:

Anyways, sorry for butting in.
I think it would be cool if they discontinued the 4R.

Well, TMC may do what you ask. Sales of the T4R are down 16.8% this year compared to 2006. You can read TMC sales for the month of September HERE

If TMC turns the 5th Generation T4R into a grocery getting soccer mom mall queen mobile, the T4R is dead. :bash:

Keep in mind that these numbers speak nothing of profits, just pure volume. When you can sell an F150 or Silverado new for under $17k vs a new Tundra for $22k, you can buy 5 F150's or Silverado's for the same price as 4 Tundras.

Toyota has to drop the entry level pricing down to less than $19k to be competitive with the Fords.

Apparently, the Toyota incentives are just as aggressive as the domestics.

You only embarrassed yourself by deleting my posts and threatening to ban me because I disagreed with your point of view. Please don
