Serious flat tire

My 7 months old with only 3,200 mileage 07 T4R SR5 had a serious flat tire on rear passenger side the other day. A piece of hard aluminum metal punctured the tire with about 1/2" slash hole. I went to a two different tire repair shop and both said that its unsafe to repair and use it since it hit and break some of the wires inside the rubber. And the cost of a new same Dunlop tire is $143.00 (installation, tax, etc are included).
Since it almost like brand new, do you guys think I can get some warranty on this from the dealership and they will replace it for free?

Man sorry to hear about that...at least everyone is OK that could have ended worse. I am not sure if the Toy shop will cover that or not, what is your comprehensive deduct on your vehicle? I claimed a tire on another vehicle my deduct was $100, however it cost almost $200 by the time all was done and my rates did not raise.

Couple of things

Unless you have a "road hazard" type of coverage, I don't think that you can ask for any help on the tire. When an object hits a tire like it did yours, no normal warranty I have seen would cover it. Because of this I have always gotten road hazard on my off road tires.

Can't answer the 143.00 price point. It seems a tad high for that tire, have you looked on the web to see if you can find it? That is a stock tire for Toyota and a lot of online dealerships will carry it. You might find it cheaper including shipping and could have any local tire shop mount it. I am assuming you are on your spare?

That sounds like serious tire damage and I think you got the right answer.

Warranty wouldn't cover unless you can make a case that the tire is defective in material or workmanship. You can find details in your warranty pamphlet.

Sorry about the unforeseen cost. It happens to almost everyone sooner or later. That, and a rock in the windshield :)
 
Yes, Im on spare tire right now and its the same size with the rest of the tires.
Americas Tire is the one that gave me the $143 price. The guy said that Dunlop tire that I have on my 4Runner is expensive. Its $120 just the tire. With taxes, balancing, disposal fee and any other crap it came to $143. But he doesnt have it in their shop and it will take 2 days to get it. He said that he can sell me a cheaper brand and same size tire and use it only as a spare.
I will try the Web and see if I can find the same tire that is a lot cheaper than $143 (shipping included) or other local tire places here.
My comp deductable is $250, so I cant use my insurance on this.

I bought from tirerack.com a few years back, very good place to do business. The only problem I had was finding a garage to mount them. Seems the Mom Pop garages are fewer and fewer, and the chain garages such as Exxon and Mobil and others do not have a way to dispose of the old (at least in the state I was in) ones or end up charging $5.00 extra per tire as a disposal fee. I went to SAMS club for my wifes car and they were great and the price was awesome as a suggestion might try them.
 
143.00 is a fair price with all the other stuff you mentioned, mounting, balance, etc.

I didn't realize that all that was in the price.
 
You just print out the cheaper price and bring the paper in and see if they'll do a price match. Might save you 20 bucks or so.
 
Call the dealership and ask if they will take care of it for you or if they tell you to "f" off, You can only get one of two possible answers really. You may have road hazard and not know it. Also go through your paperwork in your glove box, they might have some tire info in there as well.

Somehow I think the dealership could at least do a pro-rate deal on a replacement tire for you seeing as how new your 4Runner is. Most times on something that new they dont mind taking care of you a bit beyond what they are really supposed to, in order to make sure you come back to them when you are ready to trade.

Worth a shot anyway. Hell, the Ford dealership did that for me. Brand new truck, two weeks old, hit a piece of angle iron in the street and slashed open my tire. Took it back and asked if they'd warranty it, or part of it, and they did a pro-rate deal. Think I was only like 20 bucks out of pocket. I knew they didnt have to do anything for me, but they helped me out.
