I have an 04 4Runner SR5 which has 56,000 miles on it. I replaced my front rotors and pads with Brembo's and Akebono pads about a month ago. No issues..... So today, I attempted the rear rotors and pads (same brands). Pulled off the tire and removed the caliper with no problems. Went to pull the rotor out and just about pulled my shoulder out instead! So my brother and I decided that the "light" tap of a hammer should do the trick. Well, we got them off, but didn't realize that other parts were coming off with it. I'm not sure what it's called, but the part that the rotor slides over (looks like it has brake pad material on top, with springs underneath) was being pulled off with it. The rotor came off, but it broke the retainer spring and cap off, and I can't get them back on. It bent the cap and popped off the spring from the little bolt that it's connected to. I'm assuming that whole assembly is for some type of suspension for the brake system. By the way, this happened on both sides. God forbid things go right on the other side. So now when I drive, I get a really bad "metal on metal" sound coming from both sides. It's a lot more prominant on the driver's side, but I can clearly hear it on both. So what do you guys think? It drives fine and brakes fine, I just have this extrememly loud sound coming from the rear. I'm assuming it's from the springs not being there to hold that part in place, but who knows. I guess I'll call the dealership in the morning and take it in to get checked out and have those parts replaced. Just thought I would fill you guys in on what can go wrong when you assume it'll be a short and simple process. I used some penetrating fluid before removing the rotor also. It didn't seem to do much good. Anyhow, just curious as to what you guys think......

That's a parking brake assembly that got damaged there. Rear brakes on 4Runner are disk with built-in drum for emergency brakes. I wouldnt drive with that noise because it'll scratch and destroy parking drum and parts. Dealer will fix it alright, but $$$. If you already have new disks - just get manual and parts and DIY. Don't forget that manual though.
Umm, you didn't happen to set your e-brake prior to jacking up the car did you? Because it certainly sounds like you've pulled the e-brake assembly away from the hub. If the internal parts you're talking about are within the inside of the rotor hub itself, and resemble any sort of spring related clamp, then you've got the ebrake system attached. The only way I've ever seen where that would occur is if you accidently set the ebrake prior to jacking up the car. Otherwise the ebrake shoes should of just slid along the inner component of the rotor. By pulling on it, you probably tugged on the whole system through the ebrake cable, with probably set the other ebrake shoes on the other wheel.
I cannot recall on the 4runner if there is a tiny spindle looking wheel towards the bottom/inner section of where the rotor sits. On the LS400, there is a tiny sprocket looking spindle. This is to set the ebrake settings. If you recall having one, then I would turn it ONE turn counter-clockwise to see if that eases the grip of the ebrake shoes.

sorry about the delay, thanks for the feedback and yes, I did get the 4Runner fixed. I ended up having it towed ($100) to the stealership and they used the original spring and bolt to repair it for a cost of $190.00. I had to get a rental for the day, so there's another $40.00 out of the ole wallet. And it was the ebrake assembly that I broke. I set the ebrake before jacking up the car and didn't even think to release it when I was having trouble with the rotors. So, lesson learned the hard way I guess.....I'll know next time! Anyhow, hope my screw up helps someone else.
