Seriously - no more sneak pics 1 week from release?

This must be the most protected new vehicle release I have ever experienced. Either that or no one gives a damn - not worth the effort to reach into your pocket and grab your phone for a pic. Because you know they are out there in a warehouse somewhere. Getting ready their 'big' release at a state fair...

Well, if the photos we've seen around here is indeed the actual 5th gen, then I'm in your group, I don't care and it's not worthy of a picture.

This is a stretch and far fetched, maybe those pics are teasers to throw everyone off and the "true" 5th gen will be released on 9/24 that is good looking and desirable, unlike the hideous thing in pics now.

Hmmmmm. I thought that I was the only one thinking this. Wouldn't that be a total coup on Toyota's part?

From what I've seen so far I'm not impressed, I hope were all wrong and that's some other Toyota like a Highlander, or RAV4...

Those pics are definitely the 5th gen. Parts list drawings at Toyota dealerships confirm it.

The people who think the 5th gen is ugly can always switch over to Jeep's new Grand Cherokee (2011), which has classic good looks. I might just do that myself in the future because the new Grand Cherokee looks awesome to me and has a Terrain Response system (similar to Land Rover), front/rear air suspension for awesome ground clearance, and still has their excellent Quadradrive II 4wd system, which is the next best thing to front & rear lockers. Yes, it looks like there might be a Jeep in my future, but I still always have my 4th gen 4Runner no matter what happens!

+1
But I dont think I will ever own a Jeep again. Would be sweet if they could swing a deal with Daimler to put the 320 Bluetec diesel engine in it.

D'oh. There goes my theory and any chance of hope. :(

Toyota has lost their styling touches. Whatever happened to the good looking designs they had in the '90s like the MR2 and their SUV/truck line? The Previa, I wouldn't not place in the "good looking" category. The LF-A and FT-HS was some hope Toyota designs would be good looking again but with the 5th gen, I've lost hope. Oh wells, my 4th gen should last plenty long and when I need another SUV, maybe the mid-cycle refresh has warmed up to me or it'll be the 6th gen, if there is one. Or else, it'll be another Tacoma.

Yes the pictures we have seen are definately pics of the 5th gen. I have a friend who works for Toyota and their job is in the area of figuring out the allocation of dealer inventory for So.Cal. Employees last week (Thursday) in the Torrance campus of Toyota got a demonstration of the 4Runner new features

That new jeep looks ultra feminized. The front end is horrible imo.

I'll put these comments here, since the question was asked about the level of advance info put out by Toyota about the 5th gen. I spoke with someone from Toyota's Engineering and Manufacturing North America HQ (outside of Cincinnati) whom I met at a gathering this weekend. Although the 4Runner is not part of their manufacturing network here in the states, I discussed the following:

1.) Asked about design: Was told that they had heard that reviews were mixed based upon leaked info on the internet, but that is always the case. Held out hope that mid-model changes/improvements usually address the issues people have with the first run.

2.) Asked about the fact that the leaked info looks like some popular items (i.e., V-8, better headlights, LED tails, etc.) may have been dropped, like a step backwards or at least sideways: Was told that without knowing the specifics, Toyota was probably doing that to hold down costs. I guess that this was confirmed based on reports that the 2010 will not increase in price. To hold downs costs, obviously companies will eliminate some items that can add to the cost which offset increased manufacturing costs etc. that occur on a year to year basis. Engine choices would be a response to increased fleet mileage requirements. (I understand the logic, just don't agree about a new model taking some steps backward as far as items installed).

3.) Asked about the almost non-existent advertising/buzz/sneaks etc. about the 5th gen: Was told "what do you expect from such a low selling model in a battered segment of the market?" (Fair enough). He said that the Cash for Clunkers program has totally dominated all aspects of the company and that has been their sole focus this summer. He also mentioned the increase in marketing Toyota announced last week ($1 billion or so for the 4th quarter), so marketing dollars would probably be more normally distributed the rest of the year. Basically told that with the economic downturn, Toyota (and everybody else) was focusing on getting the biggest bang for the buck, and the 4Runner ain't it.

Take this for what it's worth. Really just confirms what we already knew--that the 4Runner isn't exactly high on the list of Toyota, but at least they're still rolling out a new model.

That's funny, because Jeep intended it to look more masculine. I was at the debut (NY International Auto Show) last year and they even described it as new and more masculine styling. It doesn't look feminine at all to me, but then again I always thought it was funny to say that a car has masculine or feminine styling.

BTW, the front end is very retro looking, with the classic seven slot vertical grille and the rectangular headlight housings. Looks a lot like the prior generation to the horrible circular headlight housing of the current Grand Cherokee. Overall, I think the styling of the 2011 Grand Cherokee is a big winner and I think it will be a big sales success.

I wouldn't really consider most of that information was "leaked", especially considering that some of the major auto rags had those details directly from the horse's mouth. The whole V8 thing isn't a surprise to anyone who's been following the development of the 5th gen. And it certainly shouldn't be a surpise to anyone, given the slow sales of V8 4Runners. Combine high gas prices with a terrible economy and the whole "go green" movement, and that all points to smaller, more efficient engines in this market segment. Unfortunately, it looks like the guys who really want a V8 are going to have to move up to another market segment where price and economy don't matter as much. For example, the Land Rover LR3 will no longer offer anything but a V8 here in the U.S. In fact, the new model is going to be called the LR4, even though the styling is almost entirely unchanged.

The new Jeep is boring. The specs are ok, but looks wise it blends in with everthing else on the road. Looks like a cross between an X5 and a Sorento. At least the new 4Runner is different and unique looking, and in my view (so far) not too bad at all.

Yeah, it does look like an X5 from the rear. But that's not a bad thing because the X5 is a nice looking vehicle. But to me, the front looks pure Jeep and really looks like nothing else.

I was expecting more sneak pics of the T4R than what has surfaced. I'll need to see it in person before I make up my mind. It could be worse, they could've gone unibody, front wheel drive, IRS, or dropped it entirely. At least they're still making it

As for the Grand Cherokee, I drove a 08 last week (for my job) but wasn't impressed at all. The hemi didn't feel like a hemi. It already had exhaust leaks at the manifolds. The 4Lo lever is just silly. At first the interior looks ultra lux but if you start looking close its cheap.

As for the new Grand Cherokee the three worst things are: its still a jeep. it still is unibody. it now has IRS.
