shackle locations?

Hi all-

Where/how is everybody installing shackles for recovery? After searching I see many folks have the reciever hitch shackle.. what about the front? Those tie-down eyelets likely wont handle a snatch, right?

I did find a write-up on yotatech.. though this is for a 3rd gen I think.. is it the same on a 4th gen (i have a 2005)?

Also, any tips on brands/sizes/where to buy?

For the rear the receiver hitch shackle is your best bet.

For the front just use the tie down hook as I've used it many times with no real big problems. Of course don't get too snappy and just yank it really hard as it'll probably fall off

Standard 3/4" shackle will do btw.

Thanks for the quick reply Lance! I do plan to order that receiver shackle for the rear..

without sounding sarcastic, what is "too snappy" ? It's good to hear youve used the tie-downs with success (I previously thought those things would break right off), but there is the occasional 'stuck in the mud', or in my case a more likely 'stuck in the snow bank' situation where the pulling vehicle will likely need a bit of a running start.. still not an issue?

I checked the sonoran steel site and they do specify those hangers wont fit a 4th gen.. is my only other option to weld one on?

I always wished the 4Runner came with tow hooks like you see on Jeeps. Or even on some of the Chevy trucks/SUVs. I like that look....

The tie down hooks up in the front are pretty durable. They're not the strongest but it gets the job done.

As for the "too snappy" part is giving a hard yank w/ no love meaning just throwing your vehicle in reverse and slamming on the gas w/o letting the strap get taut. If you don't the strap will give a lot of energy off and have an equal force reaction on the loops causing it to possibly break.

If you're gentle and make sure you taut the line prior to giving the pull or push (depending on the scenario) you'll be in good shape.

As always, always make sure to taut the line when recovering any object.

I got 3 shackle mounts on the rear: 1 WARN hitch receiver with WARN shackle and 2 custom made (DIY) with WARN shackles.
As for the front, I've winched 5 or 6 times using those loops from the mud when I pulled ~2000-3000lbs of mud with me out of the mud hole. So those loops can handle recovery. As soon as I'll get steel bumper, I'll mount 2 more shackles on it.

noob to recovery. so to make sure. this is a pic of the passenger side loop and hook.

both can be used for recovery?
the driver side also has a tie-down loop but no hook. do i attach a shackle to that loop?

The tie-down loop (#1 in your pic) is NOT an acceptable recovery point, unless you're stuck at the mall or something.
The hook (#2) IS there for recovery purposes.

For the rear, you can use one for the hitch receiver if it's a good Class III hitch.

so i think i wasted my money on the (2) d-rings i just bought. i already have a hook on the front and just ordered a hitch receiver w/ shackle.
