Shaking at idle

Hello,


I was stopped at a light today and my 4runner v6 just started shaking. It didn't feel like the engine and the RPM's didn't change. When I pressed the throttle and started driving everything seemed fine again. I drove around making stops and starts a half dozen times and cannot reproduce what happened? Any ideas?

EDIT: I might have an idea of what happened. Yesterday on my way home my low gas light came on. I have not let the tank get that low in years. Maybe it has something to do with sediment being mixed up from draining the tank the whole way and then filling back up?

4th gens are supposed to have a "lifetime filter" inside the tank right above the fuel pump. You may be right about the pump sucking up some debris from the bottom. From the research I've done it looks like you have to drop the tank to access the pump and filter.
 
many feel it is OK to run on gas fumes LOL>>>>>.

I do not operate any vehicle with fuel below 1/4 level ever.. most times add 8 gallons when at 1//2 tank.

IMO this low fuel operation will cost you.. dropping that tank is a PITA..

The pump is also cooled by the fuel... when I worked for a chevy dealer, we couldn't keep fuel pumps on the shelf for tahoes and suburbans because of all the soccer moms running on fumes, trying to stretch the most of of a tank, playing gas light roulette...
 
Do you think that my theory might be correct? The car accelerated fine and ran fine after that one time. Maybe something got through into the injectors or something? I didn't have a CEL either.

Maybe I should run a bottle of fuel cleaner through it?

years ago my sister had corolla had fuel pumps fail. I asked the stupid question how much gas do you keep in it. LOL.

always below 1//4 she says.
 
Update: I just drove home, it's about 20 minutes of stop and go traffic and no shaking happened at all? The vehicle ran completely normal...
 
Clean your throttle body. Takes 30 minutes and even if it doesn't fix it, which It probably will fix, it will give you better performamce. I just had this issue and it's gone.

You have the same issue? The shaking? Did it only happen once to you?
 
No it was continuous. When I was stopped, the car would shake and my rpm was low. Once I gave it gas it was good. If you had a bad fuel pump your car would shut off because it's not getting fuel. And you'd have bad starts. Get some throttle body and intake cleaner and there's a thread here called cleaning 4gen throttle body. It makes it very easy.

A bottle of fuel cleaner and a clean throttle body will be good. Try that and see if the problem dublicates.

My wife's did something similar a couple months back, hers seemed to run rough at idle and had a little loss of power shortly after getting fuel at a no name gas station. Luckily she only got about 1/4 tank to last til payday and after filling up at one of the big stations, it seemed to run better. Never had any lights come on or anything. I'd say if it didn't throw any codes and hasn't reoccurred, just keep and eye on it and for awhile.
Your probably fine, but you could check for "soft" or pending codes that don't actually throw a light but show up on a scan tool.
- Never had that happen with my 4runners, but I did have a VW that had an evap issue when getting an emission check and wouldn't pass because of a pending code that hadn't yet triggered the light.
 
Throw some Seafoam in the tank, clean the Throttle Body, the MAF (Make sure to use MAF cleaner for this step), replace the pcv and change out the air filter if it seems to be in bad shape.. Generally the shaking is a fuel delivery problem meaning it's obstructed somewhere or it's some junk getting into the cylinders.. all these things can be done relatively easy and relatively cheap. And make sure to keep your tank up in gas, goin low is no bueno

Chevy Fuel Pumps... man, when I did used cars I replaced so many of those.

Though to be fair a lot of the issues had to do with voltage drop wearing out the motors, it's part of the reason they went to an update connector.

many that had to replace the fuel pump on the GM trucks [pump and level sender failure] did not solder in the new connector for use with the new different pump. this also cause failures shortly after .

they just used butt splices and did not seal..
 
Today the vehicle ran fine. Seems a little sluggish though. MPG is down by about 1. Do fuel system cleaners do anything? I have heard Redline makes a good one?

I use techron fuel conditioner. buy at costco . never had a problem using this product. I have vehicles well over 10 years old fuel system is with no problems .
