Hello everyone,
Typically I get most of the info I need just by reading posts here, but I think the time has come to post the first one.
I have a 98 limited with 160K on it. On one of the recent trip of about 250 miles, I notice shaking(violent) under load at high speed. Load meaning just grades on the highway 95 in CT. They are not bad but can be long, multiple miles sometimes. so, eventually the car would start to feel the load and then when the time comes when it is deciding if it is time to down shift or continue to work hard on the top gear, this is when the shaking is bad. But I have also seen this when the car in fact down shifts, and the cruise control being on, tries to get back to the cruising speed, lets say 70-75mph, with 3500-4000 rpm, the shaking is also there. so with 4K RPM, there shouldn't be load on the engine, if anything, it is over raving at that point give the work it has to do. (ie maintain the 70mph which it almost did at 2500rpm)
I am trying to figure out if it is transmission or engine. (doesn't seem to be suspension or tires, as it is only under load and not constant, tires are new with less than 10K on them. New Bilsteins with 15K on them.)
I owned the car for the last 50K miles. Haven't done any tuneup or changed tranny oil yet. (haven't even done the timing belt yet. I heard these are non-interference engines.) I don't like to over maintain my cars. like, new plugs/wires every 15K, new tranny fluid at every 15K etc. so, please don't tell me to do any of that. I agree that vehicles do need to be maintained though, at proper intervals.
Could it be bad gas? (I filled up at a station in MA that had 10% ethanol sticker on the pump. how do these 3rd gens like the ethanol?)
I've had engine misfires on my previous cars, and I could usually tell if its the engine misfiring/missing. this doesn't seem to be. Also, don't know if engines missfire only under load etc...
