Sharpie's 95

Hey guys this is my build thread from a few months back.

My 4Runner is a 1995 model year 3.0 V6 SR5 5 speed. Pretty standard as far as that goes.

I bought the truck a few years ago from a guy in Hanford for $2000 big ones. It already had a 4" procomp lift kit that consisted of a bunch of bracket spacers, some bigger springs, some beefed up torsion bars and some stiffer sway bars. Not exactly ideal, but more than sufficient as I would find out.

Anywho the truck looked something like this when I first purchase it.

sharpie330-albums-wheelin-picture24411-4runner-first-wheeling-trip.jpg

The above was taken on the first wheelin trip I took it on.

It had the stock 4.56 gears and 31/10.50/15 Firestone M/Ts. I didnt really know at the time what it was that I was wanting to do or even trying to do. So a 4" lift with 31's seemed fine to me. But I soon realized that other...better...more $$... stuff was around the corner.

Anywho, before I could start doing any modifications I needed to fix a few pesky issues it had. Bypassed leaky heater core got replaced, plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc etc. Rebuilt starter, rebuilt alternator, replaced axle seals and some other stuff.

When I finally finished with the annoying little maintenance issues I started to get to the meat of it.

I started with swapping out my 4.56 gears which are pictured below, and installing 5.29s front and rear with a spartan 4 pinion locker in the rear. The front center section in the picture is for sale, factory 4.56 open, just sayin.

I got to go wheeling a bit more with it set up with the 5.29 gears still on the 31/10.50s. I was impressed with the added pep in the step that the lower gears added, but was not happy with the lack of clearance and funny lack of symetry the small tires had. I had basically came to the conclusion that 31s were too small and I needed to go bigger. So as luck would have it a guy I work with had a brand new set of 35/12.5 Goodyear Wrangler MTRs with Kevlar he was looking to sell or trade for. He just so needed a set of newer 31s for an internatioaln scout 2 he was building. Needless to say I got the better end of that deal.

We mounted them up and proceeded to go get stuck in the snow.

Then to my next order of business. The tube steel thing thats attached to my grill. Same guy with the tires had recently retired his 90 toyota pickup, it had a marlin crawler front bumper. He sold it to me for a reasonable price. I bought me some rock sliders and the rear bumper to match and installed them at work a couple weekends ago.

I put the sliders out so far so my wife can use them as a step. She likes them :D

Also, what makes my 4Runner different than all the rest, My 4Runner is eco friendly as you will see in the picture below. Some birds decided to make a nest on my upper control arm. It happened in the course of an 8 hour work day...

If you guys dont have a grill at work you need one, best idea I ever had, unoriginal as it may be.

Some seat covers, stereo and CB were installed on the interior, I dont have any pics of them as they arent really anything special. I like em though.

This truck has turned out to be a whole lot more than I first imagined it would be. I have less than $4,000 into it as it sits right now and could not be happier.

A solid axle and rear leaf springs, along with some transfer cases, are in its future I just dont know when I will get around to them.

And with that, I think that is most everything.

Thanks for reading and letting me share :D

Very cool, custom front skid plate?

Not exactly. I found the skid plate in a pile of parts in the back corner of our shop, it's the pile where we put things that didn't make it back onto a vehicle. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes things like skid plates and engine covers don't make it back on their vehicle. I have no clue what mine came off of but it fit with a small amount of modification.

Lucky you lol, I'm making one today or tomorrow, just depends when I get access to the CNC. I'm making it out of 3/16"

Sub'd for SAS in work pics.

So you posted the BBQ grill pic AFTER the bird nest w/ egg pic... little afternoon snack of scrambled egg? LOL!

Nice truck!

So I found this donor truck.

It's a 91 pickup already sas'd with fully built axles, 5.29 gears and lockers. Had dual xfer cases, 4.70 in the case and 2.28 in the crawl box.

It has marlin crawler 4" springs front and rear.

The disassembly took about 3 hours. And the carcass is getting sold this weekend.

I plan on doing the swap either Christmas weekend or New Years weekend. The transfer cases will get done later this spring.

Well the carcass is gone, $600 + $400 in parts to a local 4wd shop.

I am trying to salvage as much as I can.

Front spring hanger

All I needed to do is cut this off the old frame and clean it up. Been poking away at some f the prep during my lunch break.

Saved $200 in parts.

The rest of the stuff I couldn't salvage I had to order. They showed up today. Some shock hangers, rear spring hangers, frame tubes and some fresh bushings. Also some 12" Bilstien 5100

The rear swap is going to go down Friday and Saturday. Stay tuned

Still got those Wranglers on there? I'm currently sitting on 31's with no lift, next set of tires I'm getting I've been thinking about getting those in a 32x11.5 (it's my daily driver so Im not looking to lose all my mpg hah!). I do more trails of mud and light rocks than anything, and I'm stuck between those or the BFG K/O's (BFG's are quite a bit cheaper). I'd like to get the K/O 2's but they don't make them in that size. Anyhow, would you recommend those Goodyears?

The MTRs have been great tires for me. I know that Falken is coming out with a M/T soon, and they have their A/T in a 32x11.5

I know a few guys with 32x11.5 falken A/T and they are super happy with them.

The Wild Peaks? They don't seem to have a very good tread pattern for mud though, at least when they wear the first 25% of their life. I work in a tire shop and I've had some come in before that had at least half tread left and they looked slick as ice, no aggressive pattern at all, only rain channels. Either way, in all honestly I'll probably either get the BFG K/O's or the MTR's. I'd like the Goodyears but I've heard hardly anything bad about the BFG's, and they're about $250 cheaper a set!

I was able to get the rear leaf conversion done today. Took about 9 hours.

First thing was to get the links out of the way

a3d50af655ae8d3da371e6fe8108d253.jpg

Then disconnect the brake line, proportion valve linkage, sway bar links and brake cable. Then the axle came right out from underneath.

I had to cut off several brackets.

These are the lower link brackets before and after

After all that was cut off and cleaned up I measured and squared up the leaf spring hangers, tacked em on then installed the leafs and loaded them up to see how they sat.

After finding a happy spot I burned them in.

It was pretty dark when I finished so I couldn't get a great pic of it after. I will post up some when I get it cleaned up and it's light out.

Here are some more after pics, it rides way better than the 4 link did. Firm but not rigid, the 4 link was super soft and swayed a lot.

The front will be going in this next Thursday, pretty excited about that.

Looks good. I wish I only had 9 hours into my rear leaf conversion, but I went ahead and cut out the stock crossmembers that the suspension bolted to.
