Shattered Sun/Moon Roof Glass

I learned the hard way that welding on the roof rack while it is on the vehicle may lead to hot slag hitting the moon roof which may just shatter the glass. Which it did, right before a road trip. Because of course :dammit:

The glass is, at this point, totally collapsed in, held in only by the sliding sun roof visor.

I have found write ups regarding replacing motors and cables but there appear to be very few people who have actually shattered the glass.

Does anyone know how to replace just the glass? Does the entire headliner need to come out? I am planning on salvaging one from a pick-a-part and am praying that the headliner can stay in the vehicle. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I'm pretty sure you can just remove these screws on both sides to get just the glass off. So put the sun roof into vent mode where it lifts up the back and remove it from the outside and shop vac all the glass out. Not 100% but just trying to help [emoji106] Also I think there's one on the front corners not sure about the back..

I haven't done it, but it looks like this section of the FSM says it can be done.

Just pull the side garnishes off the two clips and undo 4 nuts. On reinstall, follow the instructions to readjust.

odds are, you can pick one up from a junkyard for pretty cheap. it has been my experience that more 4runners have the sunroof than not.

junkyard is the plan. I was just curious what it would be for a new one and was blown away.

yep, i figured that out when i realized mine was leaking and none of the "easy fixes" worked. the cost for the whole assembly is astronomical, and i refuse to pull my headliner for this. so silicone in the cracks it is then...

Yes it’s easy to pop the plastic covers and undo the 4 nuts. If you’re coming to Vegas I’ve got one with a gasket that has a leak, but the glass is there.

It's not hard - I figured out how to do it while replacing the cables & motors last year. Heck, if you were anywhere near me I'd just give my my old glass, since the $150 replacement I got from a parts yard came with new glass, and I just replaced the whole thing.
