Shift lever disassembly?

Hey guys. I did a couple of searches over the past week or so getting ready for this. I figured out how to get the shift lever out of the retainer with the spring (the bit that bolts to the transmission), but I can't figure out how to disassemble the shifter along the red line here.

Twist? Pull?

It seems like the only way to get the spring, retainer collar, and rubber boot off.

Any help is appreciated.

I was wondering the exact same thing when I took mine apart not too long ago. Kawaz on yotatech is doing an amazing restoration of his 1983 toyota pickup 4x4 and I think he did some work on the shifters, but I couldn't find the post. Because my rubber boot was old and cracked I just cut it off and then used a little soapy water to slide the new one down. Worked great! I also repainted the handle while I was at it.

Thanks for the heads up. Looks like they're pressed in with some kind of rubber fitting.

The old one is actually nice, but I figured "while I'm in here I might as well."

I guess this means my wire wheel work is going to be a bit more interesting with this piece. :wacko:

On my new truck, I cut the old one off and put some grease under where the boot goes. I sprayed the black part with silicone and it slid on great. The grease made a huge difference in the smoothness of shifting.
