Shift Lock Override

I don't know why Toyota decided to hide and bury this button underneath an access panel. Does anyone recall when Toyota in the late 80's and 90's first starting using this safety feature the shift lock override button was in plain view and all you needed was your finger to depress it and now you need to pry off a panel and use a screwdriver to depress the button.

Shiftlock is a safety feature isnt it? It stops you from shifting from Park to any gear without your foot on the brake. So if your kid is playing in your car he/she cant shift the car and let it role into your house or someone else. I would think they cover it because it will very rarely get used and you wont hit it by accident.

It actually keeps you from moving the shifter unless the engine is running, and you are depressing the brake pedal. Without the override, if you can't get the vehicle to start, you can't even roll it unless you use the override.

In the current model 4Runner, if you insert your key, turn it to accessory and depress the brake you can move the shifter out of park and into neutral. You can actually roll the 4Runner without the engine running but you do have to do the procedure I mentioned above.

Yes, that will also work, as long as the battery isn't stone dead, or you have a problem with the ignition lock.
