Shifter Assembly Question: What is this hook-like thing

I took apart my shift mechanism in hopes of discovering a way to cure sticky shift syndrome before it goes floppy.

I didn't figure that part out yet, but I did manage to do some other damage.

What does this hook-shaped thing do? I snapped the end off. Might be able to glue it back on, I think.

I would also try to repair it but I don't think gluing it is the way to do it, the best way is by "plastic welding" but you need to know how to do so correctly.

Yeah, somehow I knew this was a spendy part.

I did figure out what this does, somehow.

I can move the shift through all the gears, but when I go to "L" (first) it acts like its still in (2)

So this has something to do with that.

Well I guess there's a bright side...how often do you actually have to manually shift into first gear, the trans will still automatically shift into first when it needs too.

My 2004 V8 will not manually shift into first until I get down to around 10 MPH or less.

Jb weld or super glue works wonders, i super glue shims while assembling big excavators and have banged the 10,000lb boom into them befor and they have stayed in place thething is to clean the mating surfaces very well, i use electric contact clearer and loctite instant super glue with much succes now that was metal to metal but im sure super glue or jb weld will work great as long as you get everything clean
