Shifting problems

Hi all
First time 4Runner owner. One week old (to me ) 2012 4runner Trail edition. Has 91k miles. Gorgeous white pearl.

I just noticed today an issue when coming to a stop. It feels like when it goes from 2nd to 1st it kicks. Also since after this I started getting guapee paranoid, i hear a whine. Now I’m not sure if it is the tires or whatever.

One more thing is that I was accelerating through a turn and when the car went from first to second it kicked again.

Should I be concerned?
Is this the nature of the beast?
I stepped off a automatic 2016 mazda6 i leased from new.
I’m a car enthusiast that have owned mostly four door turbo cars and built my own miata 1.8 turbo. So I’m not new to wrenching. Just new to all this truck owning thing.

I googled this but most people who had issues had very old cars.

I would do two things at minimum: Do a drain/fill of your transmission oil if not done. Drain and fill your rear differential if not done. :boink:

I have a little kick from 2nd to 1st but it is very subtle. Changing your transmission fluid may not completely resolve the issue but lessen the effect. Try changing the rear differential fluid, and your whine should be much less noticeable.

The dealer I purchased from offered 2 yr bumper to bumper and lifetime tranny and engine.
Should I still do the change myself or just bring it to them?

These two are considered maintenance items. So you can do it yourself or have the dealer do it. The 2 year bumper to bumpers will not resolve these issues if you do nothing. You can take it in then ask them about the two issues since you have nothing to lose.

bring it in, make them aware. Especially only being a week in your possession. I know my state has a lemon law, so sellers can held accountable and honest

yes 30 days in Massachusetts. Just has to have under 125,000 and be sold for more than $700. If the vehicle fails state inspection buyer can have the seller fix it or get a refund.
 
Trails were never made in pearl white... Just saying.


Hard shifts are not normal... I would be concerned with a used truck. People often trade in problems....

Not normal. Take it in even if its just fluid change just so they document. Beats saving a few buck on the change then have them blame you later on for 'doing it wrong'

Personally, for trans fluid, I would do it as partial change every while instead of full flush all at once.
 
most times the upshift harsh is from the PCM sensing a slippage .. the PCM then increases tranny fluid pressures.

have the dealership check the fluid condition and level. since you have a warranty and your not familiar with these best have the dealership do it ...

the drive shafts should also be greased and all the drive train fluids checked .. as was mentioned the rear diff does require changing ...

IF the dealership does not like the tranny fluid condition have then drop the pan and clean up the filter screen and pan then do the fluid changing.
 
Mine whines since I got it at 50k miles. Now at 97k, it has not gotten any worse. Replaced all 3 idlers, belt, no change. I just live with it and it is a fairly common complaint from what I read.

Regarding the trans, are you feeling this before you stop or right when you start going again? Because it could be a lack of grease in the slip on the rear driveshaft if it's the latter. Easy self-fix. But still definitely get the ATF fluid changed anyway. I just had mine done again 2 days ago. It is $99 at my dealer including the Toyota ATF.

It’s white. I dunno why I added the pearl. It does have. As it of mica in it or so it seams.

This is what I am going to do. I’ll schedule a check up soon. It just don’t seem normal. I ****ing knew it. I should’ve bought a brand new Hyundai.
 
Did you buy it from a Toyota dealer? If not do you know if the factory maintenance was followed. If the selling dealer was not a Toyota dealership, and the dealer did a transmission flush I'd make sure they used the correct atf fluid. ( many dealers use a multi vehicle atf ) I suggest taking it to a Toyota dealer or a Toyota specialist to have it checked. If you have a warranty only good at the place you bought it they should honor what the Toyota dealer says.

I would double check the history and the VIN. No white trails in 2012. I think the first year for white trail edition was 2014.

it wa spurchased directly from Toyota and i remmeber the guy atatching the "history" seems like it was serviced on scheudle, i cna also request this info.

hmm, interesting.
they did feature it as a trail.
it has the following options:
nav
sunroof
side rails/steps
both front seats electric
garage opener
4.0L engine
4X4
no XREASS (confirmed)
and it is white.
3rd row seat.
and inverter setup in rear and center console (120V)
