shimmy in the steering

so tonight i noticed that on the highway only, the steering will shimmy, or vibrate, back and forth slightly.

something is obviously not right, so when i got home. i took a peek at the front suspension and steering and saw nothing obvious, as well as making sure all the wheel lugs where tight.

anything else that should be checked?

it is a 2006 V6 2WD Sport Edition with 28k miles and i have not done any off-roading lately (if you can even call what i do off roading)

Do you have any really intense tires on it? My steering does that pretty much from 40MPH up. If not, maybe one or both of the tires on the front need to be re-balanced?

And that doesn't bother you. I have KO's and the wheel doesn't move a hair even at the 113mph limiter.

OP check balance with a hunter road force machine. Yes make sure you go somewhere that has it and $$ for it.

KO's aren't what I'd refer to as "intense," but everyone's definition differs. I meant like a M/T tire. But you are right, I suppose that should bother me, so I just took it in to get rotated and balanced and they are actually much less vibratory than before. They still go back and forth some, but I'm going to chock that up to having big tread blocks.

it still has the stock Dunlop Grandtreks AT-20's on it

How many miles are on them? Do you remember if/when the last time you got them balanced was? If not, I would highly recommend trying that first.

same as the truck, original tires. 28k miles

imma take it to a shop tomorrow, it's still under warranty but i dont think the steering/suspension is covered. but my mustang had something wrong with the suspension and it was fixed too, it wasnt supposed to be covered by the warranty either.

My bad I forgot you said the mileage in your OP. Steering/suspension should be covered if it's a factory warranty, I think. Let us know what happens. Good luck.

If its just a small vibration its probably a front wheel out of balance. A quick and free check would be to rotate your front tires to the rear. You could also check visually if it looks like you lost a wheel weight.

If it happens just under braking you may have a warped rotor.

Unless more than one wheel has lost it's balance. Then you could still have it if one of the rears is not balanced as well. Of course, if do do it, and it goes away, then you know it was probably just one of the front wheels.

Hey Buddy,

I had a similar problem with my 03 sport it turned out to be a seized caliper. It will get much worse if thats the problem.
