Shock Advice '02

I'd like to stiffen up my stock '02 limited.
Thinking about new BFG All Terrain T/A's on the stock 16"rims. The stock vehicle always looks like it's butt is low. It needs a little stiffer shocks in my opinion and would love to see her up a touch, maybe an inch?
Any suggestions on shocks, for mild off road and on road? Will stiffer shocks give me any lift on the rear or do I need a lift kit? If I go to 17" rims will I need a lift kit for clearance?

Shocks do not provide lift, suspension does (air shocks aside).

If you use larger rims with the same size tire, the overall tire height should be the same, so clearance shouldn't be an issue.
