Shock question

My son bought a spacer lift for his 2004 4runner but the Pro Comp shocks wouldn't fit. I called 4wheel Parts and they said there's an issue with the pro comps. Anyways we put the stock shocks back on but they're squeaking like crazy and I'm sure they're original. Question is, can he use a regular shock or does he need something with more travel with the lift? Truth is he probably won't do a lot of off roading, it's mostly for looks unless I can get him on the trail with me. Thanks for your help

I'd get some 5100s, adjust to wanted height, ditch the spacers, and call it a day.

You want longer shocks for the rear with a lift (if you lifted the rear and not just leveled)

For a front spacer lift, you don't really need (or even really want) shocks with more travel.

Its hard to say, but its safe to assume the travel and valving would be off when using a stock shock with lift, or with an change in spring rate...

Most shocks sold for lift applications will be setup to accommodate the addition height, and it could effect the ride and how it performs.

At this age of the truck and the shocks, its probably best to change it...

When I did my suspension refresh the truck actually got a lot better regarding its on-road manner and handling. Felt more secure around turns and at speed as it felt more controlled all around.

I wouldn't let the fact he doesn't off-road actually influence the decision...

Really good recommendation... I do like the way the 5100 rides on the street.

I was happy with the 5100s + 885s on street and dirt up front. They actually paired well with the rear Metal Techs + Icons. I'm even happier with my 2.5 Icons up front though. Really put them to the test out in Death Valley for 5 days last week and never had a shock fade issue.

I agree with these guys, 5100's are great on the street and can be adjusted by perch if you want to preload or taller springs (I had 885's and liked them), and can be picked up lightly used on here for pretty cheap.

If the spacer is providing the lift

in the rear then what shocks the spacer is installed on doesn't matter.

Not true. Rear shocks matter too because you're still lifting the rear outside of the stock travel. Just don't pair the rear 5100s with anything more than a 1.5" lift. 2" or more make the rear 5100s bottom out.
