Shocks/Struts for 2003 SR5?

Called the dealer, they want $175 for each shock, not including the spring, etc.

Not looking for anything fancy, just reliable. What do you guys recommend for strut/shocks? Would prefer something already assembled so I don't have to mess with compressing the springs, etc.

KYB strut plus assemblies from Rock Auto.

I used KYB quick struts in front and Bilstein 4600 shocks in rear (2006 SR5) and very happy with the set.

If you're not opposed to making very slight modifications to the rear frame mount (as in, just reaming out the hole about 2mm), you could pretty easily swap a full set from a newer 4Runner. I found a fully assembled set of dealer take-offs from a 2016 or 2017 4Runner on ebay for about $140. Had 97 miles on it. Found a set of rear springs from a forum member, also low miles, for another 25$, IIRC.

remove top nuts (14mm wrench)

disconnect swaybar links (17mm wrench, ratcheting makes it a lot quicker, and also allen wrench to keep the stud from spinning, forgot the exact size)

remove swaybar bracket bolts and remove swaybar (14mm? socket)

remove lower strut nut/bolt and tie rod end castle nut (19mm socket and tool to pry the tie rod end from the knuckle, may also need another socket or wrench to keep the strut bolt from spinning)

pry bar to move the control arms up/down while trying to wiggle the strut out/in

that's all

torque wrench for putting it all together

A few of my DIY buddies have the Tecton torque wrench and reported no problems over the years.

I rock Harbor Freight (1/4" and 3/8" clickers) for a fraction of the cost and Craftsman (3/8" digital). All seem to work just fine. Say what you want with HF, but I'm not building a motor with these torque wrenches.

If it was more precise work, I'd say pick up a better quality/branded wrench.
