Anywho, did the TBU today. went to the junk yard this morning specifically for a 03 tundra sr5 TRD extended cab. to my amazement it had 13WL calipers on it still and they weren't all busted to hell like the rest of the truck was. I was going to just take everything calipers, rotors, pads, clips, shims but one rotor was cracked from the wreck to i had to spring for some new stuff. while i was there i picked the front struts from it too! YAY another lift for my younger brothers truck. Maybe christmas present for him! I spent about $100 total on the TBU. good stuff!

Oh that reminds me. the motor was just about toast as well, most of the aluminum pieces on it were cracked, oil pan, timing belt cover, intake... (didnt look at it very long)
who ever was driving slammed into something really really hard! there was even a good amount of blood inside.
 
so a little update, we all know i did the TBU, currently in the middle of a ITRE install. but what next?
I figure i am getting married in a few months and any money or project i would like to do or want to do will then be put off for a year or more, so... why not do them now?

so i have been tooling around with the idea of selling the brush guard and building a bumper like one from shrockworks.

so i have a question for you metal people. what thickness should i make it out of 3/16 or 5/16? (there is a $90 price difference.) can i get away with one sheet 4X8? and how can i make the edges rolled like this bumper or the one from shrocworks?

i currently weld 1" - 1/8" sheet for work so supplies and tools are no problem doing it myself. the only thing i dont like about this bumper is that there are no rounded edges.

5/16" is just over 1/4" thick and for a bumper, that's overkill. IMO 3/16" is way more than adequate for that purpose.

When I remodeled my ARB bumper, I used a 1 1/4" tubing and sliced off a quarter portion lengthwise and use that for the rolled edge effect to effectively match that of the ARB's.

I'm sure you've seen these from my build before..you're just forgetting I hope!

The larger OD tubing you use, the bigger the rolled edge effect you'll get of course..If it still doesn't make sense...shoot me!
 
5/16" is WAY too thick for a bumper. It would end up weighing about 250 lbs. (Unless you're talking about aluminum) Most folks use 1/8" or 3/16" steel for the outer skin of the bumper, and the mounting brackets/winch plate would be 1/4" thick steel. Also, a 4 x 8 sheet is more than enough material to make a bumper from.

Ah I was just messing with him since it's his username is all...lol!

I used me good 'ol 4 1/2 angle grinder..Just make sure you securely clamp the tubing and be on the safe side. Not wise to hold it while using a high speed cutter.
 
Well i am finished with any mods for now. i found a new toy. lol

I proposed to my :girl: and all the money is now going towards the wedding and honeymoon. (Hawaii)


also on another note. we had some 4runners in the shop today. the one on the rack hit a curb really hard and had to replace the lower A arm, ball joint, alignment, brake lines, front brakes, rear brakes were toast (leaking axle seal keeping it quiet)

the other one was just in for a new battery.

The TBU just saved me from a near highway crash . Details to come...

so it was about 10 pm driving home on the highway (150 mile trip) and i have to pee. so i decide next gas station i come across im going to go to the bathroom, well driving down the road at around 75 mph im following a black Tacoma in the right hand lane and my exit for the gas station is coming up, as the exit comes up he puts his blinker on and hits his brakes because he is taking the exit too. well all of a sudden i start gaining on him very very quickly (he slammed on his brakes) and pulls of to the side of the road (just where the off ramp and highway break apart) and directly infront of me is a parked black cadillac escalade sitting in the middle of the off ramp with its lights off. i go around the driver side and the tacoma goes arounf the passenger side. at this point i was going at about 15 MPH, so i know it i didn't have the TBU i would have smashed in the back of that Taco.

Scary stuff. Some people are dangerously self centered with a bizarre degree of disregard for other vehicles/drivers. Any idea why the Black Caddy was stopped on the exit ramp with its lights off? Nice heads up reaction skills by you and the dude ahead of you. Well done.

Today i installed it and have a few more things to tweek on it before i call it good, but this thing is 100X more solid than my original brush guard and bumper.

Question, what have you guys done for turn signals?

someone got a new to them pair of tires and rims. (damn these 15s took some work to clear my TBU, even with 1.5" spacers.)
