Shop just called...

Last night when driving home from my Martial Arts, the check engine light goes on.

No reduction of performance, just a little stutter to the acceleration. After the stutter, nothing.

Before this happened she's been running like a beaut. No problems.

So the shop calls and said the TPS Sensor is bad. I don't know what code was thrown, or if they tested it.

I know the pedal doesn't stick or anything of the life.

Is there any info anyone can give me about this?

Write up on changing it? I am at work and won't be able to look at the Haynes manual until later, so I don't know if theres anything in there about it.

Any help would be awesome, as searching for it usually reveals the throttle cables to be bad and I am pretty sure I don't have that problem.

Did they pull a code? Need to know what that is...

Have you ever changed your plugs? If not, they may be worn and the gap is getting to the point where you will start missing at higher RPMs.
 
I would imagine a code is what lead them to this conclusion, so one of the codes that would indicate the TPS.

I have been with this shop a while with all my cars and trust them.

I can't imagine that the codes would over lap on a misfire from bad plugs and and a TPS.
But if they do, could I know why? I'm no professional and am just trying to wrap my head around this.
 
Ask them what code came up and we'll tell ya what you're dealing with. The TPS is easy to replace, might as well give the throttle body and IAC a nice cleaning too since it'll have to come off to replace the TPS.
 
That code means the circuit to the TPS is bad. That could mean it's the TPS itself if the connector on it is damaged/corroded or it could mean the wire going to the TPS from the computer is bad somewhere along the line. I would have them test the sensor's resistance to determine that it's bad before they replace it, otherwise they may need to replace the wire or connector instead (which would be my guess).

x2 it's simple to make sure the TPS itself is providing the proper resistance (or voltage) as it is moved through the normal range. Then you can figure out if it really is the TPS or just something in the harness or connectors.
 
so what would I need to test it myself, because he cleaned it all out and grease the throttle lines, and what not. He's pretty thorough and charges such. Im not paying another 94$ for and hour of diagnostics and service.

Not sure exactly how this would translate to the 4Runner TPS, but here's an excerpt from this page that I think works for just about any TPS: Toyota 22RE Throttle Position Sensor

The Toyota 22R-E (and R-EC) engines use a "Linear" throttle position sensor. The sensor basically looks at idle or closed throttle (IDL) and throttle angle opening (VTA). The TPS itself is simply a linear variable resistor that when driven by the ECU produces a linear voltage in a 0-5 volt range, 0 volts being idle and up to 5 volts representing throttle opening angle. Internally, there is also a switch that detects the idle position.Proper adjustment of the TPS is critical for engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions. An improperly adjusted TPS effects many other inputs and outputs from the ECU, many of which would not even logically point to the TPS. Aside from being out of adjustment, the TPS can just plain wear out or break internally.

See page 31 of the attached (assuming you have the V6 which I think is guaranteed with the Limited.) The FSM is your friend. FSM: Fuel System 5VZ-FE

The procedure above applies but the specs are somewhat different.
