shopping for new exhaust

hey guys, i'll be putting a new system on my truck soon (98 SR5 6cyl).. don't want to go overkill or spend too much money.

anyone have ideas on a decent cheaper setup? not looking for too much noise, but i want a nice grumble.

also, i'm trying to avoid getting ripped, as i've never had this done before for any of my cars. whats a fair price range if i buy my own parts? (on labor)

My local shop is a Magnaflow distributor and will charge $200 for a 2.5 in-house fab cutback with an 18" Magnaflow muffler. From all of the videos I've watched and my prior magnaflow sys I'm sticking with them. I don't even care about the hp gains, just tone. I have yet to run into a situation where the 3.4 wasn't enough.

Don't make the same mistake I did. I have been through 2 mufflers and still am not happy. If I were you I would leave the stock piping and just replace to stock muffler with a flowmaster 50 series suv. It will have a nice rumble and will not drone like my 18 magnaflow dumped.

got a borla muffler on my 2000 2wd 4runner back in 07. It drove me crazy with all the noise after the shifts.

cj, if I'm right I think your talking about the raggedy ricer sound when the engine rpm's are on the way back down? If so then I completely agree. I hate that, revin it up sounds good but when you let of it sounds like $hit. Magnaflow is the only one I've found that eliminates that. And it has a nice growl. Exhaust is all preference, I normally like louder exhaust but only with a V8. IMHO there's no reason to have a loud 4 or 6 cyl unless it's a Supra, STI, EVO.... light cars with big nutz that actually go fast. I just don't see the point of hammering on it, making a lot of noise and going nowhere. That aint worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin gettin it on. My $0.02

I went with a walker's quiet flow system. Direct bolt on. Very simple and 150 shipped to my house. A little louder that stock just the way I like it. No reason to have a loud exhaust but I guess I'm getting old.

Me too. Walker QuietFlow SS. It's stainless, and bolts right up to the cat and tailpipe. The hardest part for me was finding the right gaskets...
