Should I Be Concerned?

I'm looking for a newer model Camry for my wife. We finally found one she likes. Its a 2007 xle with 22000 miles. The guy selling it is just an individual that buys/sells cars. What's got me concerned is that its $3000 below blue book. Everything so far checks out. Its from Miami Florida, currently for sale in Tennessee. The guy says its cheap because he just partnered up with another guy and they are selling off all cars they had before the partnership so everything on the lot they'll have joint ownership in. seems legit and with that low of mileage I can't imagine anything major being wrong. Any thoughts or opinions? We're planning on pulling out tomorrow to make the six hour one way trip to get it. Thanks for any advice.

No problem, appreciate the thought though. It seems like its one of those things that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. However, everything checks out so it may be just a dang good deal.

Do you have the ability to drive it at all? It's still within the PT warranty for a bit in case gremlins start to reveal themselves.

I'd be wary.

If you haven't already, run the carfax, and get the vin and register on Toyota Owners Website to get as much history on the vehicle as you can.

07 with 22k miles is super low. 5500 miles/year? thats only 456 miles a month being driven. If it was a grandpas car, maybe legit. Otherwise, it could be suspect.

Not sure how mechanically inclined you are, but bring a flashlight and inspect everything, and take your time checking it out, especially if you are going to drive that far to see it.

Heres a short list of things Ive done with my current and previous vehicles. You dont want the long list and my random ADHD wont let me type all of it :jump:

1. Pull the oil dipstick and see how dirty the oil looks
2. If its automatic and there is a transmission dipstick, pull it and look at the fluid, it should be fairly light in color with only 22k on it.
3. Look at the nuts and bolt ends of major engine/suspension parts, do they look like they have been wrenched on?
4. Drive it like you stole it with the radio off and windows down, any strange noises/vehicle behavior usually come out when driven hard.
5. Look at the brake fluid resovoir, if the fluid is light colored, you should be ok.
6. Check rotors for scoring and uneven wear.
7. Check the radiator for any dents/dings to cooling fins. The sides should have no dents/dings. This can be an indicator of front end collision.

WARNING: I also suffer from random OCD and these things most people may consider as excessive, but if I'm spending the money, I can be as critical as I want.:D

Good luck!

We will be test driving it, don't feel comfortable buying before driving. The seller said he believes this was a company vehicle that was a spare, hence little use. I've registered with Toyota, not much available on this one. Probably going to run an auto check report on it, will run that or Carfax tonight.

The carfax/auto check should show the first registered owner. If it was a company car, it should have the business name or might be listed as fleet.

Ok guys, really need some input here. Ran an autocheck (showed more records than carfax). It does show as a fleet/lease vehicle, no other info. It also has an accident on record, right/rear impact with another vehicle, no damage reported. What are the downsides to a fleet/lease vehicle? The accident concerns me, I've discovered a couple dealers with deals like this that sell cars with frame damage. I think this seller may have got burned on it and is just trying to unload. It brings me back to the mileage, it's awful low so I'm thinking the fleet/lease may not be an issue.

Rental car companies also register thier vehicles as fleet/lease. Accidents, even if minor but recorded are never a good idea unless you dont plan on re-selling the vehicle.

Ive driven company cars and rental vehicles. Because it wasnt mine, I definitely was not easy on them. I mean I wasnt jumping curbs with them, lets just say speed bumps didnt function as intended.

I also know folks who have purchased fleet vehicles with no issues except a severe depreciation in resale price.

FWIW my 4runner was listed as a fleet vehicle......however come to find out it was owned by a Toyota dealer in Ohio before I bought it for it's whole life. It had all the service records etc. After some research I found out it was a vehicle driven by the owner and his wife. So don't let that steer you away. I'd find out who owned it, whether it was a rental or just a company car.

Carfax listed the actual owner? Most states have privacy laws about that. I have never seen the owners name and private info listed on a carfax. You will usually see title transfer/registration event information.

Honestly, this is why I prefer private party purchases. If you really want to meet the owner, know who drive it, to get a good impression of how the car was handled.. you go private party.

When you buy from a dealer, you need to accept that 9 times out 10 it was purchased at an auto auction after being sold on trade in, somewhere, and eventually working to an auction...a.k.a crap shoot.

3k under book on a camry, one of the hottest selling used cars in the country right now, makes me wonder what is up....

Like I said the owner of mine was a dealer and was listed......

Great points on the other stuff too especially the used camry point

Wonder if it was different just because it was a dealer and not personal? Either way, I've ran several reports and never saw any of the previous owners listed. There's enough stuff on this one that I'm not 100% confident in it. That alone is enough to make me pass. Wife and I have talked it over, we've decided to extend our budget somewhat and wait for something she likes with lower mileage and a better history. I appreciate all the input!

I appreciate the input guys. Ended up passing on that one and found a 09 Camry XLE with 29k miles from a private seller, and it was local.
