Should I Buy a 4th Gen V8 LTD 4WD?

Folks...I found a 2005 T4R LTD, V8, 4WD. It's nice truck with just about 150K on it. Few paint scratches and dings but nothing major. I like that it is a LTD and has the V*. The think I don't like is that it has the "X-REAS" suspension system on it which I understand has had multiple problems. Also, the gas mileage would not be that hot. I am not getting rid of my 3rd Gen but want to upgrade a bit. Thoughts?

My bro just picked up an 07 Limited v8. The gas mileage is that or a little better than my 3rd gen. The extra power and smoothness of the drivetrain is a nice upgrade over our 3rd gens. He loves it, im a little jealous. Especially after he bought $3k worth of Icon Extended Travel Suspension, $1500 in TRD PRO wheels and tires, and a closed box intake and exhaust. Literally few days after he purchased. Said he wanted a better setup than me!! This is my little brother. LOL

It has everything. Heated seats, leather (in good shape), sunroof, tow package and drives great. I can walk out the door with it for $11,200!

The one thing that deters me from 4th Gens is the look. They are the ugliest of all the gens in my opinion.

I do have to agree with this statement. However, as machines, I have no doubt that they are great. I have never been inside one. With all that they offer, I'd still be tempted to put up with the looks for all the benefits.

I used to dislike the look of the 4th gen too until they came out with the Tonka Toy Shoebox design of the 5th gen....now I like the 4th gen....

I did! He is 30 years of age, coming from his 400+whp AWD Talon and broken old ass but running 1990's v6 Cherokee with almost 400k miles!! Kid you not. This Jeep has been a reliable beast. We have done nothing to it and been in family for 15 years.

He just wanted something to drive, hit the trail and be reliable. What is better than a TOYOTA!!!

Buy it. Get a decent price for your third Gen and enjoy.

Do realize though that parts are a little more expensive. And it won't be compatible with any Liquid Moly products!

I like the looks of the 1st, 3rd and 5th gens. 2nd and 4th are still nice with mods.

Anyway, I don't like the weight dist. with the 4.7L..

yes, buy it.

mileage isn't too bad. I get low 20's all highway. mid 16's in town.

it matches my 85 4runner almost exactly for mpg, but has more than double the HP...

Stock the looks are OK, modded and the right color I think they look killer though. I love the V8 in them too, a lot of fun to drive. They'll move pretty quick compared to our 3rd gens...

I agree completely, the 4th gen is far less attractive than the 3rd/5th gen.

4th gens drive so smooth it's rediculous. Accelerator is smooth as hell also.

Personally I would be looking at the 2006+ V8s. The Xreas system tends to go bad around that mileage I hear. 2006 they rounded out the fenders and they look a lot better imo. They also changed up the interior as well I believe. Was 2005 the year they got the higher output v8 or 2006? I forget.

I was on the hunt for an 06-08 limited for a while. Came across a couple, but they were extremely hard to find. I still keep my eyes peeked once in a while. Eventually gave up because clean examples were out of my budget (80K miles- $18K, about 3 years ago)

I have an 03 v6 now. I had an 05 tundra with that same v8. You will love the motor, it super smooth and has a ton more power that the 3.4 3rd gen motor. I have the x reas suspension on my 03. I was told by toyota one shock was leaking and needed to be replaced, that was 2 years ago. I think it still handles great. If you have a complete failure of the x reas system just replace it with normal shocks.

If it weren't for the fact that I have my current truck just the way I want it I would have probably already jumped on one. The thought of starting over with the modding doesn't thrill me.

After driving this 4th gen (2005, V8, LTD, 4WD) I have to say I am impressed. I went through the vehicle with a fine tooth comb. No wrecks, no issues other than the X-REAS system and a few paint scratches. I even found the original invoice from Toyota at it sold for $41K in 2005. It has all the service records, manuals, etc. I am somewhat concerned by the sheer weight of this model T4R. It tops out at over 6000 lbs. You can "feel" the weight difference as compared to our 3rd Gens.

As I have put a lot into my 3rd gen and as I have been OCD on maintaining it (I keep track of every single thing I have done to it since I bought it along with receipts) I am reluctant to sell it. However, one poster suggested selling it and putting that $$$ towards the 4th gen. Hell, i just put four new Michelin ATX LT2 tires on my baby a few months ago and they still look like new. The last set I had, I got 80K miles out of them and the only reason I bought new ones was the dry-rot cracks. They had an easy 10-20K miles worth of tread still on them.
