Should I buy the Toyota extended warranty?

I bought my extended warranty for just under $1600 - that was for an '04 V8 that I bought used (had 45k miles at the time). That was for the Platinum warranty through a dealership I found on this forum. The warranty covers the car up to 2012 and up to total od. reading of 95k and has $0 deductible.
I just used it for the first time to replace both front calipers (both had pistons frozen) - probably would have been a $700 + repair through the dealership otherwise. I expect to use it again to replace the water pump when I have the timing belt replaced.

Check out the Toyotas in my sig and the mileage. Some of the "sold" ones are still going strong and into the 300,000 mile range.
Not ONE of them ever experienced a problem in the time that I owned them that that would have even come CLOSE to paying for the extended warranty. I can't believe people buy them. Now maybe if it was a Ford or Dodge...

I bought the ext. platinum warr. from Toyota themselves/ ( http://www.toyotafinancial.com/cons...=true&_pageLabel=pg_UsedVehicleProtectionPlan ) through the dealer when I bought mine, used.
The cost was significantly higher than you quote, so be sure what you're buying. (athough NY is a state where everything costs more)
But anyway.. A major failure or two, and you've paid for it.
Additionally, the dealer offered a money back guarantee on mine; if I go the term w/out using it, I get the $ back.

Toyotas do keep going just fine.
It's the sunroof, door locks, and ECU's that make the extended warranty a good deal (if it's under $1K and good for 100K miles)

And to the rest of you guys - although I'm a Toyota owner, I am under no illusions that Toyota quality is as good as it once was. Just because you had a bunch of older yotas that went for a long time without a problem does not mean that your new Toyota will be the same. In my opinion, Toyota quality has deteriorated a bit since the mid-90s. That said, I don't have the extended warranty - mostly because I'm a fix-it-yourself kind of guy.

I would stay away from anything that is not Toyota Corporate sponsored.
Dealers go broke and you might move so don't by a one dealer only warranty.
Many if not most 3rd party warranty companies are not designed to pay you or be around for long. Classic corporate deal where the owners pay themselves big bucks and then declare bankruptcy. All legal, also popular in the health club business where they sell you a long term membership.

I bought my Hondacare warranty through Bernardi. They sell the real deal factory warranties, not some 3rd party ripoff. It's a totally legit company and better than messing with the dealership. They will actually do a 12 month payment plan at 0% for it too.

The dealer in question has been in business for 40+ years around here, and he's still growing, so I don't think that's a concern.brucemoose2 said:

I don't see how any warranty purchased under other circumstances can be worth the paper it's printed on. They can look at purchase records, see that it wasn't purchased according to their terms, and deny the claim.
