Should I buy this 2015 Trail? On the fence about KDSS

Hi all,

I have been lurking around for a couple weeks doing some research for my next purchase. I have decided that I want a 2015 Trail without KDSS as some owners are having issues and I plan on keeping this truck for a long time and don't want to run into expensive service issues 8-10 years down the road. Plus I am planning to have a Toytec ultimate lift on it before the end of summer which should negate the lack of KDSS somewhat.

The problem is, none of my dealers have or can even find a Trail without KDSS. I am not in any kind of hurry so I could wait it out if needed. However, I was just given a quote of $35,500 + doc for a 2015 Trail with KDSS and Entune premium with apps. According to Truecar, this seems like a killer deal. However, I was hoping to some current owners thoughts of the price and the KDSS/no KDSS option.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

go outside your region to find a non kdss version.

its a waste of money if you pay for a kdss and just rip it out to mod the vehicle.

now you can do a mild lift with kdss, but if you get serious, your ripping it out so to speak and throwing away 2-3k of the vehicle cost

Look at it this way... you won't have to worry about it during your warranty period. If something were to ever happen you could just remove it.

That is a killer deal for a trail with KDSS in our region. I have not seen many, if any, Trail's w/o KDSS in CA/NV. You can go outside your region, and probably get a 2015 without it for about $1000-$1500 less, and make a nice road trip back home. You will have to weigh the positives, and negatives, against this plan. The deal you are getting is a VERY good deal. I paid a tiny bit less than that for my SR5P.....
Is it a Trail, or Trail Premium?

Base price w/o options on a Trail, non premium in this region is: [retail] $36,115 - add the KDSS, and they must be quoting you almost invoice, which is weird, as the 4Runner in CA/NV is nearly impossible to get, and if the dealer has one on their lot, they are NOT giving them away...

it sounds like you don't want it for reasonable reasons.. i'd hold out for one without KDSS it is a pain if it goes bad..

If you are not in a hurry just order one and get exactly what you want. See if the dealer will match that price or better if you order one.

I just heard back from one dealer who is proposing a dealer trade from another state but they want $700 for transport so it is actually more expensive than the one with KDSS in town. I ended up going to Phoenix for my last two cars so going out of market is not too big of a deal for me but there are costs involved and I am not keen on running a not broken in motor on the freeway for hundreds of miles. I am going to do some more research today in some other markets and unless they are significantly cheaper than this one ~$1,500, I think I should jump on this one. I mean if I ended up having to rip it out at some point down the road it is going to hurt a lot less if I am essentially getting the KDSS for free.

for the record, KDSS is a $1750 option... will accommodate more than a "mild" lift (just not long travel)... and has not been subject to a massive rash of problems. there've been a couple threads documenting issues, but more than a couple have been due to botched suspension installs by shops who've been incurious/uneducated re: the ins-and-outs of KDSS.

now days, breaking in a motor is not like the old days. just drive it and vary the rpms every 30-60 mins.

ie: run at 65, then 75, then 70.

hell I never follow the manual to not go over 4k rpm and use cruise control.

given that the TRD Pro is a 1" lift in the front only, i feel like the whole definition of the "mild lift" landscape has shifted considerably.

Not sure I'm following your logic on Toytec helping with lack of KDSS. Like saying I'm putting on a new set of rims to help with the tires poor traction.

I would not be looking for anything for than a 2-3 inch lift so we are good there. I work from home and don't see that changing anytime soon. So I don't drive much and have a 14 Forester (Hers), a 12 Mustang GT premium(mine), so with my 4-8K miles per year being spread across those I will be keeping the 4R for a really long time (10+ years) while new sports cars will probably come and go.

As per my research of the KDSS the two primary benefits in simple terms are:

1. Increased handling on the road.
2. Increased articulation off road, allowing ~1 inch more travel.

Why wouldn't the Toytec ultimate kit help in both of those areas? I am probably going to get this one with KDSS anyway, but if I am off base there, please let me know.

Seems like a killer price for a trail premium with KDSS. I spent two months trying to haggle and couldn't get anyone to consider anything below $38kish. Finally pulled the trigger and ordered one, received two weeks ago. I would jump on anything sub $36k as a great price.

I went back and forth on KDSS for a good part of those two months. Drove both with and without KDSS and a buddy's 14 trail with Toyotec, decided the KDSS was worth it, could definitely feel or at least perceive a difference in the ride.

I figure when the 3/36 is up, I will drive to Kansas or AZ and get a Toyota Platinum for another 4-5 and cover me for cheaper than the potential KDSS fix costs would be.

Wow, thats an amazing deal. That is the usual proice for a Trail without KDSS.
(Please, no bragging about how you get a better deal than me )

In my area I couldnt find any Trails WITH KDSS.
But I didnt want it because of the cost, and I didnt want issues.
