should I buy this '86 4runner

Hey all, I havn't worked on too many toyota trucks, however i'm not new to working on cars, though most of my experience is with old chevy and dodge 4x4 trucks and volvo cars.

I am looking to buy a 86-89 4runner with the 5 spd, and 22-re engine. (prefer the IFS since I won't be doing too much wheeling)

I saw this post near my town and wonder what you guys are thinking:

I spoke to the owner and he says that he recently replaced the clutch with a new flywheel, its currently registered, passed smog almost 2 years ago. The only thing he's done to the engine since is replace worn out vacuum lines, so im hoping that i won't have any issues smogging it.

What are some things i should be looking out for when buying a used 4runner?

That was my first thought also. WAY too much wrinkled metal. Wonder how the frame looks? I'd pass on this one unless you intend to turn it into a rock crawler, and don't care about the bent metal.

I think $2500 is WAY too much with that entire banged up side. Thats a crazy amount of work to set right.

That was my first thought also. WAY too much wrinkled metal. Wonder how the frame looks? I'd pass on this one unless you intend to turn it into a rock crawler, and don't care about the bent metal.

Well he said he rolled it over like that while taking a turn too fast on a dirt road. I don't care too much about the looks, but i definitely wouldn't wanna deal with twisted frame. the guy says that the passenger side door still works ok and top still comes off just fine, but if i check it out we'll take the top off to confirm that.

when i go under the truck to look around, other than just looking to see if the frame is noticeably twisted, what else do you think i should look at under there? He also said he thinks that the u-joint from the output yoke on the transfer case might be going out, so i'll definitely be looking at that as well.

We've got a breed of robot spammer that likes to copy other posts in the thread to look real and then throw some links around. The spammer copied you, and fourwd1 quoted the spammer and then disappeared his post. He wasn't calling you a spammer .

$3500 is way too much for a truck that's been flopped though, even in your neck of the woods. You can get a better truck for that kind of money. If this guy isn't willing to come down below $1500 I wouldn't even bother, and personally I wouldn't give him more than $1000 no matter what shape the rest of the truck was in.

this is all good to know. this is a newbie question, but what are some of the things that can happen to a truck that's been flopped? other than the obvious body damage, and possible frame damage?
