Im looking at a 89 4runner. i really like this truck but im concerned about a few things. The automatic transmission has 177,000 miles on it and im wondering reliable toyota auto transmissions are. The 22r engine has approx. 40,000 after it was rebuilt. It idles rough at stoplights but wont die. the seller said something about advancing the timing after the rebuild so it would idle smoother. im just wondering if this thing is worth my time and money
should i buy this crazy thing?

Don't worry about the transmission. I don't know about where you are, but when the automatic in my '86 died at 240,000 miles, I picked up another for $75 bucks. If it hadn't worked there was another for $150 and another for $175.
Hows the body? Any rust? Whats the seller asking?

Yeah dont sweat that transmission they get tougher the older they get.
well shes pretty much bone stock and a little beat up. a little rust around the wheels but no holes. the drivers side signal light is broken and theres a nice dent beside it. nothing too catastrophic, and i dont mind a few dings as long as it runs. its good news about the tranny being solid at least but im wondering what could cause the idle to be rough, even after a rebuild. it starts and runs fine (even though it totally drags ass :boink

Doesn't look too bad for a $1000. You can't expect it to be perfect for that! Lol. Have someone look at it before you buy it if you are really concerned

If you are really worried about rust though, I wouldn't peek behind those fender flares

40K since engine rebuild? You got another 200K left before it will need it again, probably more.
Those fender flares are a nice bonus.... they go for over $300 for a new set.
Rough idle could be as simple as a vacuum leak, or vacuum line in the wrong spot, especially since it was rebuilt. It can be a small challenge to get all the vac. lines right.
