Should I get new tires?

I just picked up a 99 4runner limited from my local dealer. I got a great deal, and overall the thing is in excellent condition. It came with some Mastercraft Courser HTR tires, and they have decent tread on them...but they suck. They let go very easily in some light rain and overall just dont perform well. They are very quiet though.

I sold my old truck today for $750 so I have some cash to throw around and I was thinking of upgrading the tires now, to help make it through the winter a bit easier. Our winters (Columbus Ohio) are mainly rain and light snow with one or 2 bigger snowfalls and thats it. I dont plan on wheeling this truck (Did I mention I live in central Ohio, mudding is not off-roading) so I am not really concerned with off-road performance. I am going to go up in size to the 265/75/16's but im trying to decide if its worth it to upgrade now or just wait until the current ones are bald (probably 20K left in them easy). I could probably pawn these off on ebay for $100...but im just not sure if its a good inventment to get tires now while I have the extra cash or just wait.

What would you do?

i dont know if your a new member, but welcome and congrats on the new 4runner. i think you should get new tires. getting new tires is fun, and if you are going mudding you will be happy you did. if you just dont want mud tires dont get them but if you kinda do or dont really care i would get them since you have $750 because they look cool and you'll be happy you get something that looks good and performs well. POST PICS of the new runner.

Yeah, im a new member, thanks for the welcome. I'm not into spending close to a grand for fun, but I appreciate your opinion. I am not going to be mudding, that was the point. If I was going to go off-road it wouldnt be to drive through dirty water, I promise. I'll get some pics of the runner, but right now it looks pretty standard. Green limited, removed running boards, thats about it.

Here is a pic of my old truck, its a 2000 tacoma (not the one I sold for $750)

I had these on my 4Runner when I got it and they did fine in the ice and snow in Southern Illinois
 
Buy the best tires that suit your needs and a tire with solid hwy manners and all season should fit your needs.

As for the question about tires... I would buy tires while you have the money. If you don't you will just end up pissing it away on something you really don't need. Can't go wrong buying some new tires.

It is a 1984 truck axle. I did the SAS myself, yeah. I put dual truck t-cases and 4.7 gears in one of the cases to address the opposite side diff. I wanted to stick to all toyota, so that was the best way to do it in a tacoma at the time.

I've been looking at the michelin LTX AT/2 and might just stick those on there and call it a day. I need to check up on them a little more. I like your line of thinking (re: pissing the money away), and thats what prompted me to post to begin with. The tires I have now I dont believe are a safety issue, but I dont think they'll last terribly long and while I have some extra cash I might just go out and do it now so I wont have to worry about it for a few years. I was gonna put it into a timing belt and water pump but I hate wasting money on labor so I'll just do that myself, I just want to wait until spring or at least until my garage isnt dripping icicles.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I know a few things about toyotas and have some experience to back up my BS, so hopefully I'll be a good resource around here.
 
I also considered getting a snow specific tire and just keeping these for the summer months. I hate expensive decisions.

Thats what I did. Just had some Blizzak DM-Z3's put on last week and I couldn't be happier! Relatively quiet, superb traction in panic braking situations and no complaints..... so far.

Not to say that you need winter specific tires, but it makes driving in the snow more entertaining :jump:
 
Either Michelin LTX's or Cross Terrain's. You absolutely cannot go wrong with Michelins and you will be happy with your decision.

Just make sure that the place that balances them knows it a hub centric wheel.
