Should I keep my 4Runner or not?

Hey guys. So, I'll be heading off to college in less than a year. My parents bought all of the first cars for their kids (me and my 3 older brothers). We all started with 4Runner's actually (my 99 stock, a 99 SR5, 99 Limited, and my oldest brothers was a 96 SR5).


My parents are considering selling mine though and investing in a V6 for me to last me a longer in life. My question is, should I stick with my base model Desert Dune or look into getting a SR5 or Limited for a better "investment" so to speak?

Look into getting an SR5 or Limited for sure! I've had my 98' SR5 for about 8 months now and love it. Especially if you're gonna be traveling back and forth from college and doing a lot of highway traveling, you'll really enjoy that extra v6 power as opposed to 4 cylinder. Definitely a better investment in my opinion.
 
Get a limited, i moved to florida last august for school and while i was down there i drove it back and forth about twice a month cost me 100 bucks one way super comfy leather seats and the audio system in the limited is awesome
 
i second getting a limited, they are soooo plush and comfortable, power seats are huge plus for me, also leather is easier to keep clean imo cause you can just wipe it off and it doesnt stain, but i used to have an sr5 sport and the cloth in these 3rd gens really holds up well, 230k no rips or tears!

Both motors are equally reliable and should go to 300K+ no problem if you keep up on maintenance. Do it if you want more power, but don't bother for reliability.
 
I think getting a v6 over a 4 cyl is def a good idea and as for SR5 or limited options i say get wat is more in ur price range which im assuming is cheaper and well i have an SR5 Sport and i love this thing. The seats are cloth but it looks just like it did the first day i got the 4runner.
 
Get an SR5 over a Limited. That way you won't a) have to pay $$$ to replace the silly digital HVAC control b) replace the ripped up leather seats c) deal with the delaminating tacky wood trim. Plus 5-speeds did not come on Limiteds and a manual SR5 also avoids the pink milkshake thing.

I could have bought either new in '99, and I am happy I went with a 5speed SR5.
 
A 99- 2000 limited with elocker is my favorite 4runner. Otherwise a 99-2000 highlander would be nice. I would sell the difference probably wont even be that much.

I agree with the durk. While leather seats are nice, if you are planning on getting 350k out of it, the driver seat will go. Cloth will be more durable.

Agree with the other reasons as well, though even though my wood grain is delam-ing, I still think it looks pretty sharp compared to the more plastic look of the grey. That's personal preference though...
 
A guy on ebay sells replacement seat covers for around 250 per side for the leather. I have only seen SR5 dealer installed wood delaminate. Limited wood never delaminates because it is the entire plastic piece that is dyed. The limited is actually fake wood, while the Sr5 is real but stuck on.
 
I actually consider going from a 2.7 to a 3.4 a downgrade in reliability considering timing belt changes, etc...

But hell, I am doing it too. Go for it.
