Should I pull the trigger on this 2005?

Hello folks! John in San Francisco here--first time poster, long time 4Runner fan. I'm on the cusp of purchasing a Certified 2005 Limited V8 4WD.

Here's my dilemma.. There are VERY FEW 4Runners matching these specs (V8, Limited, 4WD) for sale in the Bay Area. At the moment this is the only one I can find in Northern California. This one has 47k miles, X-REAS, and is in very good condition. I would ideally like to wait another 2 months or so when I can afford to put more money down but I'm afraid I won't be able to find one like this one again (or not for awhile at least).

Cost: ~26k, 29k out the door (The dealer WILL NOT negotiate on price)
60 months APR: 5.99%
Down: 4-6k
Monthly: $485-446 respectively

What do you guys think? How long is it going to take me to find another one like this if I let this one slide?

This is a tough/tense decision for me!

Tough decision. Personally I would. It's pretty hard to find the 4runner you want because they are so dependable people don't give them up. It's easy to spend other peoples money tho...
Just try to put as much down as possible and get the lowest finance rate possible. Sounds like a good deal though.
 
Travel To Buy

Great vehicle, but I think you can find better deals if you are willing to travel and sort through a bunch of dealer BS. For ref, I bought my 05 Ltd with 38k for $22k (which was and still appears to be a great deal). It helped that I bought it 2 years ago when the gas prices were taking a huge bite out of SUVs.

I bought mine on-line. I spoke to the dealer quite a bit, and researched them to ensure they were reputable. Drove about 8 hours to inspect and buy if it turned out as good as the dealer made it out to be. Fortunately for me, it turned out to be a worthwhile trip.

I recommend you research prices nation wide to get a feel for how much the vehicles are really selling for - then establish your price and go from there.

I would def not pull the trigger on that deal. :gun5: I don't see where the deal is
 
Ouch, Seems a little steep to me. Maybe travel away from Bay area to seee if there is more of a selection an dbetter pricing. Remember, NEVER fall in "love" with veichle when shopping around.
 
wow thats expensive if you ask me, i got a 06 v8 30,000 sport for 22k. But saying that, i had to wait for months to find the right model. Personally for that kind of price i would look at least for a 06/07 model it has some extra features compared to the 05 but then again if you have the money, go for it, these babies are v hard to find! I'm w/ the others...there's no deal to be had there. Also that interest rate is high as well. Are there any credit unions available to you? You should be able to find a 3.99/4.25% relatively easy. As I'm sure you've noticed...interest rates are incredibly low right now.

If you're willing to travel outside the Republik of California, the same vehicle can be found for $3-4k less without much effort.

I'd walk away from this one without a 2nd thought.
 
Looks like retail on that runner is about $25,000. I'll be honest with you. NOTHING sells for full retail. Problem is if you were to pay retail then total it the next day, insurance will be paying retail less any deductions for condition. The last thing you want to do is be upside down right off the bat. If you did pay a chunk down that would help, but seems like they should come off the price a bit. I guess if it's what you want and it's the only one available, it might not be too bad of a deal. Besides the fact that the price is a rip off, the rate is not bad. Used car rates with excellent credit is hovering around 7%, at least around here anyways.
 
I just got the exact same 4runner a month ago. Silver Limited V8 Full time 4WD (all wheel dr) The dealership had it listed at $23K....after some haggling I got them down to $17K!!!!! The truck looks brand new! No cracked leather, NAV, no stains on the carpet, no scratches on the paint.....FLAWLESS!!!!

You can DEF get that truck cheaper!!!!
 
Thanks for responses! I'm a little torn but I think I'll let this one go. I agree that the price seems high but I can't find a Limited 4WD V8 for anything lower... Part of my intention with this post was to get a discussion going on current financing trends. I know that interest rates are low right now, but credit is tight too. Kind of contradictory isn't it?

I received three credit scores yesterday ranging from 691 - 795. The dealer used the 691 Experian score. Is this pretty typical... for dealers to use the lowest (most conservative?) of the credit scores? I will need to do some research on credit unions and see if I can get anything lower than 5.99% APR. This is my first time financing so I'm a newbie in this arena...

I am starting to second guess whether I want a 2005 or 2006. I prefer the look of the 2003-2005's but I really do need an audio input jack and I don't plan to modify the stereo anytime soon... Are Limited with X-REAS pretty common? Any idea what percent of Limiteds opted for X-REAS?

Wow! 7%??? That's the equivalent of loanshark rates in this economy. Are they going to send Guido to bust your kneecaps if you don't pay the "vig"? LOL. Seriously, though I haven't seen 7% auto loan rates in the past 2-3 years.

I would shop around man. Doesnt seem like a great deal to me. I live in Bakersfield CA and I am looking into the 4runner in the next few months, and like you i have similar specs. I want a 06 and above 4Runner, V8, , 4WD, and beleive me i found a few for around 25-26k with under 50,000 miles. You need to look outside of the bayarea, might save a few thousand bucks.
 
I think your coming close with those numbers to affording a new 4Runner, if you are able to carry that cost.

At the very least expand your search, you should be able to find a newer model year for the same price.

I'm in Sacramento, I got a 2005 V8 Sport Edition 4wd last Sept/Oct. It had 44k miles on it and had been kept inside. I also got the maintenance history of the vehicle (CarFax) I bought it at Niello Acura, they wanted 22K and change, I got it for a little less than 20. Big battle was getting close to what I wanted for my GMC pickup. I'd shop around and not be in a hurry. I found my TR4 on cars.com there were a bunch of them on that website, all prices/mileage. So you might want to check out that website, I hope this helps...........have a good one and good luck................Harold

I'd would definitely expend my search too. look for a county that has lower taxes on sales. if it helps you can finance though your own bank (credit union)and not the dealers as everythings much more reasonable. at least in my case it was. you could always try autotrader and have a good look around if you haven't done so, good luck.
 
I'm going to agree with everyone else. You can find a better deal out there. I got my 05 SR5 V8 4x4 with 36k for $16,000 out the door in sept 2008, mind you that was at the end of the $4.50 per gallon gas summer and the dealer was looking to unload it.

the price they are offering is unrealistic, even for CA. The interest rate isn't bad though. Used car rates are going to be higher than new car rates.
 
Interest rates in the 6-8% range are not unusual at all. Keep in mind this is refering to a bank note, not a credit union or in house toyota financing. If you have crappy credit and poor debt to income, i've seen recent notes at 12%, granted this is for cars >8 years old, in which most banks won't even finance.

Keep in mind used card rates are > new car rates, and depending on your intelligence, don't be confused when you see a mortgage at 4.75%.
