Should I rust proof 2007 4Runner

Hello,

I'm excited to join this forum. I just picked up a 2007 4Runner that has been kept in immaculate condition in and out. My (trusted) mechanic who certified the car said it was in great shape but the rust proofing was done poorly as there was a lot of rust on the axle and a few other areas. I live in Toronto and was wondering if rust proofing it again would make any difference in the longevity of the vehicle. I love the vehicle and plan to keep it as long as possible.

Subscribed. Curious to hear ideas. I would think to wire brush rust, and treat with rust inhibiting paint. Then take it to a Zeibart.

I plan to do the same to my new to me '06, with surface rust on the frame welds and some on the rear axle/etc. Nothing major but I want it to last for years to come as well.

Hoping to hear any good ideas. I'd prefer to just drop mine off at Zeibart and call it a day with their 'rustproofing'. Rather than the wire brush/etc. But I'm not sure if that's a bad idea or not.

I have a new to me '04 sport 4x4 that is very clean, but it did have rust on all the frame welds and parts of the suspension that rust the day it rolls out of the factory. Everywhere else is spotless. I spent the weekend painting the entire frame and suspension system as well as the running board hangers with POR 15. It worked awesome and there is no longer any rust at all on the 4runner. I accidentally ordered the straight black color which is a gloss. I meant to get the semi gloss, but it was too late. It is a messy job and you need to wear clothes that cover your whole body and a hat because if it gets on your skin it is there for a couple weeks. I don't want to do it again any time soon, but glad I did because I know it is completely protected now.
 
I cheaped out initially at around 35k miles IIRC and did it to my 2008 I used rustoleums bare metal primer (white) and then went over it with the gloss black protector.

I am at 125k and don't regret the decision. It's much easier to get, the primer helps identify where you miss and it serves it's purpose well.

Two stock skid plates and salt/brine on the road... No problem. Oh yeah, decent enough off roaring where I do need to replace the factory skids.

You will definitely want to do the rear diff, but be careful of painting over the drain plug, it will happen and it will take extra force to get it to spin with care to not strip the bolt. The axle gets hit as does the bars back there. Get the rear sway bar connections too, the don't hold up too well to the weather.

No wire brush was necessary, just some water, clean rags and a degreaser like simple green.

Plus if you do cheap out, it's no big deal to get back down there and do a touch up.
 
Depends on the environment you drive in. I'm Canadian and most people up here are religious about rustproofing, that is except people with 4runners that I wanting to buy (or at least it seems that way lol) .

We do ours yearly, the best method is to get a setup at home so you can spray your own vehicle, their not too pricey (considering the price of a body job). Personally, I just don't trust the local garage because he just lets the 10$/hr apprentice.

My sister and I both drive the same year Corollas with similar mileage. My rockers, floor and doors where all rusted out when I bought it where hers is all original and in immaculate condition, only difference was that hers got rustproof regularly and mine never did (another difference was I payed $150 for mine where hers cost $1600 hehehe).

Sorry I may have been a bit misleading in my first post but my point remains the same. I don't own the setup myself (or else I would take pictures for you), and I actually didn't rustproof my car last year cuz im planning on replacing it sometime this summer, but all the newer cars in the family have it done yearly.

It was an old neighbor who bought one awhile back and let me use it, not much to it tho, i'm thinking of making one. It's basically just a sprayer with different tips (straight, extra long, 90 degree etc. just to be able to get in everywhere). It hooks to an air compressor and it has a pickup line which goes into a bucket of the rustproofing, as the air passes over the pickup line, it draws fluid up the line and out the nozzle. Make sure you don't get the new "no drip" stuff cuz it's garbage, you want it to drip thats how it gets into every crevis, it just requires you to wash the truck a few times after spraying. Hope this helps, let me know if you have anymore questions

By the way, I only have experience rustproofing cars so i'm not sure about the frame or anything like that but this will definately work for your rockers, tailgate, doors etc. If your truck hasn't been rustproofed before you will need to drill holes to allow access for the sprayer and TRUST me, a few drilled holes is much better that a bunch of rusted holes lol
