Should I trade in my 2005 4Runner SR5?

I am new to this forum. I have had my 05 4Runner for 5 years. It has been a great, without any problems. I now have 98,000 miles on it. My husband wants me to trade it in for another car(another 4Runner or something else). He is concerned that we will start to have repairs and is making an argument to not put good money into bad money. Idk..... I love my 4Runner. What do you all think? Are there common problems once I am above 100,000 miles? Thanks in advance.

my parents have an '03 4rnr and the only problems it had were when we first got it. after that its been fantastic. and now with about 230xxx miles on it...
id keep it!
 
Why not have an independent mechanic go over it and give you their opinion on repairs in the next 12 months? They should be able to tell signs of any big ticket items on the horizon if there are any.
 
I bought my Gen3 ('98) with 96,000 miles on without any concerns... no problems at all and sold it to the next excited owner with about 125,000 miles on it. I sold it to pay off some bills and missed it since the day it drove away.

I bought my 2006 in September with 67,000... just like brand new!

I'd keep your '05... you know its entire history! If you've taken care of it and followed the maintenance schedule, I'd say you're golden!

Routine maintenance is a lot cheaper than a new car payment plus routine maintenance!
 
Keep it keep it keep it. I traded my last Toyota (Tacoma 4x4) in with 284k trouble free miles.
My 05' Sport 4x4 4runner has 130k and running like new.
Is your a V6 or V8?

My 08 comes off lease in a few months. 41k on the clock. Should I buy it for $18k or just lease a new one? When I pay it off in 36 months it will have 90k on it. But I'll have some trade in cash or just keep it? who knows? Repairs vs the $5k you lose on day 1 ? :shrug: We have kept out other Toyoyas & Lexus vehicles until 160k then traded...no big repairs ever.
 
Keep it, I have a 05 also with about the same mileage.

As long as you do regular scheduled service, you should have no major issues for another 5+ years.
 
You've never owned a toyota, have you? 100k miles is no longer as much of an "over the hill" number as it used to be for modern vehicles.

Every Toyota I've ever owned has been especially resilient to this. The biggest problem I've ever had was a Tacoma I bought from up north that I had to completely swap the calipers on because the road salt/corrosion had cemented the pins in place and I couldn't remove them.

I've put probably 200k total miles on various Toyota trucks (some of which had some very high mileage before I even got them myself).

Don't worry about it, keep driving it unless you just have to have a new one for whatever reason. 100k miles on a 4Runner is really trivial.
 
Keep it!

It's a sought after vehicle. Currently there are none for sale by owner between the years of 2005 to 2009
On Craigslist in my area; this should tell you something. I have researched these vehicles thoroughly for years before purchasing one. Trust me, keep it.

I just bought my 2005 and plan to keep it until it goes 300k or dies which ever comes first. Thats what I did with my last SUV (pathfinder) and there's no point in spending the money on a new one IMHO.

Do you and your husband have any experience with Toyotas, or is your 4Runner your first Toyota vehicle? The reason I ask is because 98,000 miles is nothing for a Toyota. Your 4Runner isn't a repair prone money trap like a Ford Explorer or a Jeep Grand Cherokee. If you've owned the vehicle for 5 years and it has been great so far, then why wouldn't you keep it until you at least start to have to pay for repairs? Chances are good that you'll get another 5 years and 98,000 miles on it without having to pay for any big repairs.
 
Typically, my husband does not want to have a car with more than 100K. We have had a Camry (4 not a 6) that needed a transmission at around 75K. Other than I have owned a Toyota. I just really do not want to spend money on another car right now, I would prefer to spend the money on a family trip to Europe or something fun.....
 
The vacation makes total sense.

I have heard the 100,000 argument before. It is too subjective to apply that to any car, especially one like yours. Maybe on a Ford Explorer that has been driven hard. But definitely not on a well maintained 4runner.

I have close to 100,000 on my ,03 right now and plan for another 100,000.
 
I don't beleive in the 100k argument... back in the 80's it made some sense, but engines and even the technology in fluids have come a LONG way since then. I just turned 100k on my 4runner and I'm keeping it for another 100k
 
Toyota #1: '81 Celica, no major repairs or issues, sold with 178,000 miles.

Toyota #2: '88 Camry, tranny was beginning to act up at 210,000 miles, sold at 215,000 miles.

Toyota #3: '90 T4R, little to no major repairs or issues, sold with 205,000 miles to a friend. Last I heard he had over 370,000 miles on it.

Toyota #4: '97 Camry, son still driving it, no issues, currently at over 180,000miles.

Toyota #5: '00 T4R, no issues, sold with 152,000 miles only because I struck a deal on my current '08 T4R

Toyota #6: '08 T4R, my DD and tow vehicle, only 37,000 miles.

Note that I did/do some serious towing with all of my T4R's.

Yeah, needing a new transmission at just 75,000 miles is a big disappointment. But that's very rare and I think you probably just had some bad luck. But still, if you think about the big picture, even if you have to pay out of pocket for a big repair like a new transmission, it's still not that much more than a few payments on a new vehicle. So in that sense, it's not always a bad idea to keep your old car, especially if it's paid off and you own it 100%.

cant blame you, my whole family sports the toyotas.

i have a 2004, with 108k on it, and i have yet had to do anything major. and i dont think i will, maybe a timing belt or something simple but nothing thats gonna break the bank.

except the new tires this saturday... but i wouldnt include that.
