I bought my 01 Runner used and the only thing i received was one key. Id sure love to have a keyless remote instead of having to manually lock and unlock all the time. I thought i read somewhere that all 99 & up models had keyless entry standard? I see the fobs on Ebay but i dont know where i would locate my FCC ID # since i never got a remote:confused: Any help is greatly appreciated and yes i searched:awais:

1. Start with the following conditions: you are seated in the vehicle
a. Key is out of the ignition.
b. Drivers door is open, all other doors are closed.
c. Drivers door is unlocked.
2. Insert the key into the ignition (don't turn it) and pull it out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. cycle the power locks 5 times, evenly spaced and relatively fast.
b. Close, then open the drivers door.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds:
a. cycle the power door locks 5 times. (Same as before)
b. Turn the ignition to on, then back to off.
c. Turn the ignition to on, then back to off.
d. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically) indicating successful entry into programming mode.

Do these steps above to find out if you have a keyless entry system. Also in another thread someone said something about a box being below the drivers seat, dont know about this one though. I have a 02 sport that came with keyless entry and thats about all the help I can be, still learning and discovering have only had my T4R for 2 weeks.

I got a second remote on ebay for 25 bucks, but I had one to match it with. Starting from scratch may be rough. I sure the better guys on this forum can help though

hope so man. im going outside after work to check and see if i have a box under one of my front seats, maybe if i do the FCC # may be on there.

Actually, they were an option in 99, it was in a package, but most 4Runners had them. In the beginning of 01, they made that $1,500 package standard. Which really lowered the price $1500, since 99% had that package. It may be possible to buy an 01 in December 2000 without, but I doubt it. Do you have heated mirrors and 6 speaker stereo. The 5 & 6th speaker are the little ones located on by the front window on the door frame.

I got the cheapest 01 in March and it had 2 remotes. The salesman was surprised, but I knew the special package was now standard. Also, the Limited model which had everything to begin with, they lowered the asking price $1,500.

yeah ive got 6 speakers and heated mirrors, no boxes under either front seat:( guy at dealership said something about behind glovebox but i took the box out and didnt really know what i was looking for. Would there be additional wiring or anything under the hood i could look for? Thanks guys

try the steps above, those are the first steps of programming new remotes. That will at least tell you if you have keyless option, then the trick will be to find which fcc# will match.

I've done just a *little* work on this as of late (see related keyless threads on this sub-forum).

It is not as easy as doing the procedure to find out of you have RKE (remote keyless entry). That only works if you have one of the VIP systems installed (RS3000 or RS3200). Those are the ones with the black box under the driver seat. These are either dealer-installed or port-installed.

The other option is a factory-installed alarm and RKE. This is what you most likely have...especially if you have a Limited trim model.

See this site for more info on this:

http://www.ikeyless.com/toyota/4runner/2001

To find out if you have a factory-installed alarm, do this:
1. roll down driver window
2. lock doors using button on driver door
3. close door and wait for red LED on center console to start blinking (indicating the system is armed).
4. reach through the open window and unlock the door manually (pull up on the lock itself). The alarm should go off (horns honking). If not, you probably don't have either the factory-installed alarm or the VIP alarm.

Now, the trick is (and this is where I'm stuck), how to program the factory-installed alarm/RKE fobs? All the instructions I've seen are for the VIP system. I'm about to order a fob from eBay that comes with instructions, so hopefully they are different than the ones floating around here.

Also, call a Toyota dealer (not just a used dealer, an actual new-car Toyota dealer), and give them your VIN. They can check the build list to see if it had keyless from the factory or if an add-on system (dealer-installed) was done. No purchase necessary.

I appreciate the reply but i dont have a limited and as i posted above, the dealer was of no help at all:mad: Maybe ill try calling another dealer

Yeah, find another dealer...doesn't have to be local to you. Find the nearest big city and call that one. Both of the dealerships I called wouldn't tell me anything without the VIN.

tried the programming thing, didnt work unless i just didnt do it right. it says hit the LOCK side of the lock/unlock button 5 times and then open the door but if you hit the LOCK button the door is now locked and you cant open the door. Does it make a difference if i manually unlock the door or is it ok to hit the unlock button? I think this only works if u have the box under the seat which i dont:(

Generic RKE systems can be had for less than $50...which is slightly more than 1 OEM remote. So, all is not lost, young padowan!

try hitting the power lock then hitting the power unlock ie lock, unlock, (thats one) lock, unlock (thats two) do that 5 times. I printed the steps and took them out with me when I did it. Hang in there.

Stealing my thunder with the alarm how-to? :D

** UPDATE**

The instructions say to cycle the door locks by hitting the LOCK button five times but another site said you hit the LOCK & UNLOCK buttons five times and that worked (so you actually hit the buttons 10 times for anyone else confused) :) My locks started cycling themselves after doing the code.
Now what, do i have everything except a remote???? Not understanding if this really means anything but can anybody tell me what to do now? :awais:

(1) Go to eBay and get an OEM remote with FCC ID : HYQ1512Y

(2) Program it (follow the instructions that made your locks cycling)

It should work.

Good luck!
